Antwerp & Brussels (Eurotoday) – Low-emission zones (LEZs) in Antwerp and Brussels have led to improved air quality and reduced pollution levels, according to a recent study conducted by the Independent Health Insurance Funds in collaboration with other research bodies. A significant drop in nitrogen dioxide concentrations has been noted.
Air quality in Antwerp and Brussels has improved following the implementation of LEZs. This conclusion was drawn from a study by the Independent Health Insurance Funds, which showed that nitrogen dioxide levels have declined more than other pollutants.
The study evaluated the environmental impact of LEZs introduced in Antwerp in February 2017 and Brussels in January 2018. Though Ghent and Tournai were among the first cities to adopt this policy, Ghent’s LEZ, launched in January of last year, is still too recent for a comprehensive assessment, according to a report by VRT.
Over the past five years, air quality in the LEZs of Antwerp and Brussels has improved significantly.
Between 2016 and 2022, nitrogen dioxide levels dropped by 30% in Antwerp and by 37% in Brussels. During the same period, fine dust particle concentrations fell by 17% in Antwerp and 22% in Brussels.
The improvements are not limited to areas immediately surrounding the LEZs. Increased air quality was observed as far as five kilometers from the zones.
Researchers also found that air quality improvements in Brussels were most pronounced in the city’s economically disadvantaged central districts. However, these same districts continue to have higher pollution levels compared to wealthier neighborhoods. Another noteworthy aspect of the study is the decrease in the use of diabetes medication in cities where LEZs are in place. The authors suggest further research on this potential health benefit.
Air pollution is known to pose serious risks to human health. Exposure to nitrogen dioxide can irritate the respiratory system and trigger asthma, while long-term exposure to fine particulate matter has been linked to cardiovascular, respiratory, and even mental health conditions. Residents in highly polluted areas see healthcare providers more frequently, highlighting the impact of poor air quality on public health.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and fine particulate matter have been major contributors to air pollution in Belgium, causing respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Before the implementation of LEZs, cities like Antwerp and Brussels experienced high levels of traffic-related pollution. To combat this, Antwerp introduced its LEZ in February 2017, followed by Brussels in January 2018, and Ghent in 2020. These measures prohibit the entry of the most polluting vehicles, using criteria based on fuel type and compliance with European emission standards.
