A. Danko: EU Reform is Essential; Brussels Must Represent All Member States, Not Just the West

Bratislava – Deputy Speaker of the National Council of Slovakia, Tibor Gašpar (Smer-SD), had his comments about a potential Slovak exit from the European Union and NATO misrepresented, according to Slovak National Party (SNS) Chairman and fellow Deputy Speaker Andrej Danko during the Sunday discussion program “STVR O 5 minút 12.” Opposition lawmaker and SaS party leader Branislav Gröhling emphasized the need to reaffirm Slovakia’s commitment to European institutions, even suggesting constitutional amendments, as reported by TASR.

“The EU offers us numerous benefits, but if Brussels questions our need for gas transit through Ukraine and insists on costly liquefied gas, while only advocating for the interests of Western nations, it’s only natural for such discussions to emerge,” stated Danko, asserting that reforms within the EU are essential.

During the program, Gröhling criticized the recent visit of Deputy Speakers Danko and Gašpar to Moscow, claiming it brought no tangible benefits to Slovak citizens. “There is currently chaos in the land registry, and people are worried about their properties. No one is addressing these issues; instead, Mr. Danko is showcasing videos from Moscow,” he remarked.

Danko also addressed criticism from Western ambassadors in response to remarks he made to the Russian news agency TASS, where he claimed that Western nations are fostering divisions among Central European countries and that “Germans, French, and Americans take pleasure in this.” Ambassadors from the United States, France, and Germany expressed serious concern over these statements, labeling them as false and misleading, and emphasized that they do not represent the positive relations Slovakia maintains with EU members and the US.

“I stand by every word. To the Germans and French, we are seen as subservient. The decline of Germany is due to its dependence on the United States. It was a grave historical error that American troops did not also depart Europe when the Russians left,” Danko asserted.

The discussion also touched on gas prices. Gröhling criticized Danko for failing to prepare adequately for the suspension of gas transfers from Ukraine, unlike other EU countries. In response, Danko remarked that gas prices have surged fourfold, attributing this increase to the President of Ukraine. (January 19)

“To the Germans and French, we are seen as slaves. The decline of Germany is due to its dependence on the United States. It was a huge historical mistake that when the Russians left, American troops did not leave Europe as well.” – Andrej Danko

  1. Seems like Mr. Danko thinks Brussels is a buffet, and he’s not getting enough of the good stuff. Can’t wait to see how that goes over with the neighbors over a pint! 🍺😂
