In a demonstration of solidarity with Ukraine marking the three-year anniversary of the Russian invasion, Antonio Costa, President of the European Council, announced he will visit Kyiv on Monday alongside Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.
“February 24 marks three years since the onset of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. I have chosen to be in Kyiv on this significant occasion with Ursula von der Leyen to reaffirm our unwavering support for the courageous Ukrainian people and their democratically elected leader, President Zelensky,” Costa shared in a post on ‘X’.
Ursula von der Leyen previously announced earlier this week her intention to travel to Ukraine on Monday, accompanied by the entire college of European Commissioners.
“Ukraine is a democracy; Putin’s Russia is not,” stated a spokesperson for the European Commission.
The spokesperson reacted to remarks made by former American President Donald Trump, who referred to President Zelensky as a “dictator.” “Our position is very clear: President Zelensky was legally elected through free, fair, and democratic elections. Ukraine is a democracy, while Putin’s Russia is not,” emphasized Commission spokesperson Stefan de Keersmaeker. (02/20/2025)
