Bahçeli, who has long portrayed himself as a staunch adversary of the PKK, surprised many with his unexpected overture.
However, imprisoned PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan appears open to collaborating with Bahçeli and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. This was revealed in a statement released Sunday by the pro-Kurdish DEM Party, following a visit to Öcalan the previous day.
“I possess the necessary competence and determination to contribute positively to the new paradigm supported by Mr. Bahçeli and Mr. Erdoğan,” Öcalan reportedly stated in the DEM Party’s announcement. “I am ready to take the necessary positive steps and make the required call,” the statement further quoted him as saying.
Responding to these developments, Erdoğan acknowledged Bahçeli’s initiative during a televised address on Wednesday, remarking, “We hope this unique window of opportunity that the ruling coalition is offering to end the terror will not be sacrificed to personal agendas.”

In his statement, Öcalan emphasized the urgency of resolution, citing “recent incidents” in Gaza and Syria as evidence that the issue “can no longer be postponed.” Notably, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was recently removed from power after years of oppressive rule.
The volatile backdrop of Turkish and Kurdish relations was underscored by a deadly incident in October, just a day after Bahçeli’s remarks. An attack at the Turkish Aerospace Industries headquarters in Ankara claimed the lives of five people.
At the time, Turkey’s interior minister speculated it was “highly likely” that the attack was carried out by PKK members. The PKK remains classified as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S., and the EU.
