Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized on Friday in Brussels that European leaders are increasingly recognizing the need for the continent to concentrate on its security, enhance competitiveness, and improve daily life for citizens. He stated, “We require a profound shift in European thought,” during a meeting with Polish diplomats.
During this gathering, Tusk was engaging with diplomats as they prepare for Poland’s upcoming presidency of the Council of the European Union, set to commence on January 1, 2025.
Addressing the diplomats, Tusk expressed confidence in their capabilities, stating, “I believe that thanks to your efforts, the risk of disappointment is minimal.” He highlighted that the Polish Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels comprises “300 of the most qualified individuals from Poland and Europe who are working to guide both our nation and the entire European Union during these challenging times.”
Reflecting on his experience, Tusk noted, “This is not my first presidency—indeed, this marks my second time leading the European Union as Prime Minister of Poland. Nevertheless, I still feel the pressure, especially given the high expectations for Poland to foster a better, safer Europe.”
Tusk pointed out the complexities facing diplomats, as their work will involve navigating EU regulations and negotiating compromises among various interests and objectives. He stated, “You will shape regulatory developments while concurrently facing an escalating demand for deregulation across Europe.”
The Prime Minister continued, “The degree to which Poland can steer the European Union toward the direction awaited by citizens across member states largely rests on you. An increasing number of European leaders also realize the necessity for Europe to prioritize security, boost competitiveness, and simplify life for ordinary people. A significant transformation in European thinking is essential, whether it involves migration, a unified security policy, or the fundamental competitiveness of the European economy. The circumstances surrounding us raise the stakes even higher.”
Among the pressing issues mentioned was the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine. He remarked, “The outcome of Russian aggression in Ukraine remains uncertain, and this political shift impacts numerous countries, particularly the United States. Additionally, governmental crises in key European nations mean you will face heightened scrutiny and testing beyond routine presidential responsibilities.” (20.12.2024)
