A 15-year-old Boeing 737-800 jet crash-landed at Muan International Airport in South Korea on its flight from Bangkok, South Korea’s Transport Ministry reported. The accident occurred just after 9 a.m. local time.
Emergency responders rescued two crew members from the wreckage. Local health officials confirmed that both individuals are conscious and not facing life-threatening injuries.
Officials stated that the pilot had issued a mayday call shortly before landing due to a bird strike. The plane aborted its initial landing attempt, but during the second attempt, it touched down with its landing gear retracted. The jet skidded down the runway at high speed, ultimately crashing into a wall at the runway’s end and catching fire upon impact.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed sorrow over the tragedy, describing the incident as “heartbreaking.” In a statement posted on X, she extended her “deepest condolences to the families of the victims and to the Republic of Korea.”
