Brussels’ Train Hostel Reopens: 607 Residents Assisted, Families Confront Uncertain Future

Brussels (Eurotoday): The Train Hostel in Brussels reopened for homeless families, providing shelter and support. After assisting 607 people last year, it faces potential closure again in five months, highlighting ongoing housing challenges.

The former youth hostel in Brussels, which opened in March 2023 as an emergency shelter for the homeless, provided aid to 607 individuals, including 136 families. However, it encountered financial difficulties and had to shut down after just one year, leaving many without a place to stay. Authorities are now urgently seeking housing solutions for these vulnerable residents. Meanwhile, the building has been repurposed as a temporary shelter for asylum seekers to help address overcrowding in the city’s reception centers.

What solutions are being implemented for homeless families at Brussels’ Train Hostel?

The Train Hostel has reopened as an emergency shelter for homeless families, a group that often struggles to receive adequate support. The French-speaking Red Cross, which manages the shelter, noted that families in crisis face additional difficulties finding assistance because there are insufficient spaces in Brussels’ shelters. By prioritizing these families, the Train Hostel provides a safe haven and helps address a critical need in the city’s social support system.

Families staying at the Train Hostel receive shelter, meals, and support, including medical care provided by doctors. However, the hostel is only a temporary winter solution. Many people seeking protection have been there for eight months, and some have been relocated to other shelters by the French-speaking Red Cross. The organization warns that vulnerable families, particularly those with babies, are facing uncertainty, as the shelter may close again in five months.

It’s just a charming twist in the tales of modern European living, isn’t it?
