The former prime minister stepped down from the House of Commons last week, stating he wants to focus more on international affairs, despite earlier promising to remain an MP until the next general election.
In 2024, Starmer secured the seat with an 11,572 majority but encountered strong competition from a left-wing independent candidate and the Greens.
Green Leader Zack Polanski has put himself forward for the party’s nomination, claiming that voters will have someone who will always advocate for them under his representation.
He faces opposition from Hamza Chowdhury, a councilor in the Camden Green ward, who stated the constituency doesn’t need an MP who “makes a few promises and disappears once the votes are counted.” The party’s candidate will be announced on September 11.
The election is scheduled to occur less than a week after the Green Party’s annual conference, which is in Brighton from October 2 to October 4. Labour’s annual conference is in Liverpool from September 27 to September 30.
Labour will select its candidate on Wednesday.
