“The restaurants receive the branded packaging at no cost,” the statement read.
Germany is not the first European nation to reconsider its military recruitment efforts recently. In 2019, the British Army ran an advertising campaign targeting “snowflakes,” “selfie addicts,” and “phone zombies.” France began a nationwide multimedia recruitment effort in 2024, and since 2023, the Netherlands has offered young people the opportunity to spend a paid year in uniform.
This unique recruitment approach arises as Berlin strives to grow its armed forces. As of the end of July, the Bundeswehr had 186,705 active troops, reaching its highest number in 13 years, but is striving to exceed 260,000 by 2035 to fulfill NATO capability standards.
