Aarschot (Eurotoday Newspaper) – Work to install utilities commenced in the center of the town of Aarschot: traffic disruptions near Koemarkt and Bekaflaan. Fluvius commenced another phase of work to install utilities in the center of Aarschot from Monday. Any driver passing through the area near Koemarkt and Bekaflaan should be aware of traffic disruptions.
First phase is taking place in Bekaflaan from August Reyerslaan up to Koemarkt. In addition, work is taking place in Koemarkt. The construction area is closed for all motorized traffic during office hours. Pedestrians and cyclists (bicycles in hand) can use the route. Buildings and offices are accessible.
As a result of construction work, Gasthuisstraat, Bogaardenstraat and Bogaardenlaan will be closed in Koemarkt. Thru traffic in the direction of central or Schaluin goes via an alternate road through Elisabethlaan or Pastoor Dergentlaan.
The utility works are also included in a much bigger project that sees the upgrading of the electricity grid in the city centre by Fluvius. If all the work proceeds as per plans, then the construction site will shift to Bogaardenlaan from September 23. There will be different phases of works in Bekaflaan, Gasthuisstraat, Bogaardenstraat, and Bekafstraat, among other places.
Why is Fluvius upgrading Aarschot’s electricity grid?
Fluvius is upgrading the electricity and gas distribution grids in Aarschot as a response to the increasing demands from electric cars, heat pumps, photovoltaic systems and generally an increase in electrification. The Flemish government has clearly shown its willingness to invest as much as €1.56 billion into Fluvius in order to fortify grids precisely because of this. The work on electricity grids is specifically synchronized with Aquafin/Riopact sewage system projects in order to avoid multiple digging of the same streets. In Aarschot this results in the simultaneous upgrading of the cables and a separate-sewer project in Bekaflaan, Bogaardenlaan and neighboring streets.
Utility and sewer work in this corridor in Aarschot has been carried out in a coordinated way even prior to the August electricity network phase on Koemarkt and Bekaflaan. Bekaflaan “buiten de ring” (outside the ring) – work started January 2026. Works on the outside part of Bekaflaan were started on Monday, 12 January 2026, ahead of time due to rapid progress of the adjacent work in Franseliniestraat (Langdorp). The sequence at this point was: first utility line renovation, then sewage installation with new asphalt laid in summer vacation period.
