On Friday, Belgian police arrested an intern at NATO’s strategic headquarters, Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), on suspicions of “spying on behalf of a third country and being a member of a criminal organization,” as stated by the Belgian Federal Prosecutor Office on Saturday.
The intern, a Canadian of Chinese descent, “had come to the attention” of SHAPE’s security services, which is NATO’s strategic command for operations located in Mons, Belgium.
Authorities in Belgium conducted searches of her residence and office on Thursday.
Prosecutors did not provide additional details on the suspicions surrounding the woman.
