Copenhagen Mandela Day Brings Diplomats and Activists Together for Human Rights

COPENHAGEN, Denmark, July 22, 2026 — Diplomats, political representatives, civil-society organizations, and community leaders convened in Copenhagen for an event marking Nelson Mandela International Day. The focus was on practical cooperation to enhance human rights education and diminish everyday discrimination.

Approximately 50 participants, reflecting Mandela’s diverse legacy, attended. The program included representatives from Youth for Human Rights, EMISCO, Soteria International, and the Universal Peace Federation. Held at Copenhagen’s Church of Scientology, it featured presentations and discussions on advancing cooperation in human rights, peace, and social inclusion.

Nelson Mandela International Day, observed annually on July 18, was established by the UN in 2009 to honor Mandela’s contributions to democracy, reconciliation, human rights, and peace. The day serves as an opportunity for communities to apply Mandela’s principles in practice.

Human Rights in Everyday Life

The event emphasized the link between human rights principles and daily actions. A former Danish Parliament member highlighted workplace human rights, urging individuals and institutions to consciously oppose discrimination. The presentation explored how employer and public official choices impact equality in practice.

Other speakers, including a diplomat and a participant who had met Mandela, shared diverse experiences. They consistently referenced Mandela’s persistence, dignity, and commitment to peace. Bashy Quraishy of EMISCO expressed gratitude to the Church of Scientology for hosting and lauded dignity and equality as cooperation’s foundational elements. Jonathan Skjaltholt of Soteria International emphasized Mandela’s reminder of the importance of kindness and broad perspectives in social issues.

The evening featured a summer meal and musical performance, fostering cross-organizational discussions on education, awareness, and community engagement.

Human Rights Education Anniversaries Recognized

The program recognized Youth for Human Rights International’s 25th anniversary and Youth for Human Rights Denmark’s 20 years in human rights education. Founded in 2001 by Dr. Mary Shuttleworth, the organization teaches young people about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Their aim is to promote understanding, tolerance, equality, and peace.

The Church of Scientology supports Youth for Human Rights as part of its broader educational campaign, inspired by L. Ron Hubbard. The event highlighted ongoing work in human rights education against modern discrimination, exclusion, and intolerance.

Connecting Local Initiatives with European Values

Ivan Arjona, representing the Church of Scientology to the EU and other organizations, stated that the gathering underscored a shared European responsibility. “Nelson Mandela Day reminds Europe that human rights thrive not just through laws but through decisions in daily life,” he said. The event exemplified broader European discussions on ensuring local application and understanding of international human rights.

Participants underscored education’s role in recognizing discrimination, fostering understanding, and enhancing democratic participation. Mandela’s words, “To deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity,” closed the gathering, with participants reaffirming their commitment to cooperation and practical initiatives.

Isn’t it just lovely how a gathering of diplomats at a Scientology church for Mandela Day makes the whole concept of human rights feel so… exclusive? 🙄 Who knew saving the world required a summer meal and a side of questionable affiliations? 🍽️

Copenhagen really knows how to throw a party, doesn’t it? Diplomats and activists chatting about human rights over a summer meal—just what the world needs, more meetings and free food to fix everything! 🍽️✨

Blimey, nothing says “let’s tackle human rights” quite like a summer soirée at a Scientology church, eh? 🍷 Who knew diplomacy could also include a side of karaoke and vegan hors d’oeuvres? 😂
