Last Thursday, two stray Ukrainian drones crossed the Russian border and crashed in Latvia, with one exploding at an oil storage site in eastern Latvia. Ukraine’s Foreign Affairs Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Russia’s electronic warfare redirected the drones. Latvia and Lithuania have appealed to NATO to enhance air defenses in their region following the event.
Andris Sprūds, an academic appointed in September 2023, announced his resignation in a detailed post on X to protect the Latvian army from political disputes and to affirm the readiness of the Ministry of Defense and the National Armed Forces.
In October, political scandals forced the defense ministers of Romania and Lithuania to resign amid their countries’ rearmament efforts, leaving Estonia as the only Baltic nation with a stable defense leader. New defense ministers have also been appointed following elections in Hungary and Bulgaria.
Latvia is spearheading the drone coalition for Ukraine, aiming to maintain Kyiv’s drone warfare advantage by ensuring a steady supply and supporting drone production in the West. The country is preparing for parliamentary elections in October.
