Starmer Seeks to Revitalize EU Defense Negotiations

London might be required to pay a fee to join the loan as suggested by France, with backing from other countries, proposing that third-party countries participating should contribute. They argued it would be unfair for non-EU countries to avoid paying interest when EU member countries do, according to three EU diplomats. However, British officials stated this idea isn’t under active discussion. A U.K. government spokesperson said they do not comment on internal EU processes, highlighting the country’s commitment of £21.8 billion in support for Ukraine through military and fiscal assistance.

European Commissioners Maros Šefčovič and Valdis Dombrovskis will visit London for meetings with British ministers ahead of a planned second EU-U.K. summit later this year, with talks expected to focus on trade.

Leaving China, Starmer expressed a desire to “get closer” to the EU beyond current plans, targeting defense, security, energy, emissions, and trade. Regarding the second annual U.K.-EU summit planned for later this spring, Starmer stated the intention to follow up on the 10 strands outlined at last year’s summit and aim for closer ties through an iterative process.

Jacopo Barigazzi and Jon Stone contributed to this report.

  1. Typical, innit? Starmer’s off playing footsie with the EU again—must be quite the thrill to negotiate over fees while the rest of us are trying to find change for a cuppa ☕️.

Oh, brilliant! So now Starmer wants to play nice with the EU—who knew the bloke had a flair for chasing after old flames? 💔 Typical, isn’t it? Just like insisting on paying for a round when you know you’re getting the worst of the pint! 🍻

Just what we needed, another round of tea and biscuits with the EU, all while they figure out how to squeeze a few more quid from us. 😂 Cheers to keeping the defense budget rolling while we play nice, eh?

Looks like Starmer’s trying to charm the EU like a dodgy used car salesman—let’s hope he doesn’t end up with a lemon on his hands. 🤷‍♂️💼

Seems like Starmer’s got a real knack for making friends in the EU—like asking your neighbor for a cup of sugar while you’ve just borrowed their lawnmower! 😂 Blimey, how much more do they expect us to chip in before we get a proper invite to the party?

Right, so Starmer’s trying to charm the EU back, like a scorned lover showing up with flowers, but just remember, mate, you can’t negotiate your way out of a bad breakup with empty promises and a fat bill. 😂💷

Seems like Starmer’s idea of “revitalizing” EU defense is just a fancy way of saying, “Let’s pay more for the privilege of being ignored!” 😂 Typical British charm, eh?

Oh brilliant, just what we need – more negotiations! Let’s hope this time they bring biscuits to sweeten the deal, or at least some decent espresso. ☕️😂
