Merz Minimizes Weber’s Proposal for a European Peacekeeping Force in Ukraine

“We must focus on the tasks at hand right now,” Merz replied, when asked about Weber’s initiatives.

The chancellor added he had no problem with “us repeatedly asking institutional questions” on making Europe more powerful and united, and stressed that “these are questions that need to be discussed again and again.”

However, Merz showed little appetite for getting bogged down in the sweeping European reforms that Weber’s proposals could require. “Achieving treaty changes in this European Union of 27 is a rather difficult task,” the chancellor said. “I advocate that we first and foremost concentrate on the tasks that are now on the table.”

He said those were improving defense capabilities and the continent’s flagging industrial competitiveness.

While Merz was cool on Weber’s proposals about a European army, his government has still to decide on its commitment to German peacekeepers in Ukraine. While Berlin is not as forward as Britain and France in raising the possibility of providing peacekeepers, Merz has insisted: “We are not ruling anything out in principle.”

Germany also stresses it is already acting as a regional security guarantor on the Russian border, with nearly 5,000 troops posted to Lithuania, and through air policing missions across Eastern Europe.

When asked about Merz’s skepticism about his proposals, Weber said: “We are in dialogue. We are in discussion.”

  1. Seems like Merz is all for “improving defense capabilities” while keeping his head in the sand about actually unifying the EU. Classic European politics, eh? 🤷‍♂️ Just another day of asking the same ol’ questions and getting nowhere fast! 🥴

Looks like Merz is keen on “discussing” while Europe is just waiting for someone to actually do something—classic EU move, innit? 🤷‍♂️ Maybe we should just add “talking shop” to the list of defense capabilities! 😂

  3. Looks like Merz prefers to play the waiting game while Europe’s future hangs in the balance—classic move, mate! 🤷‍♂️ Let’s just keep discussing those “institutional questions” while the rest of us sort out the mess, shall we? 😏

Oh, brilliant! Let’s just keep chatting about “improving defense capabilities” while hoping the Russian bears don’t come knocking. Classic EU strategy—talk a lot, do a little. 🤷‍♂️

Right, because who needs a European peacekeeping force when we can just keep discussing how to discuss it? Classic bureaucratic ballet, innit? 😂

Looks like Merz is all for “talking shop” while the rest of Europe is trying to figure out how to not turn the continent into a game of Risk. But hey, prioritizing defense and competitiveness sounds like a proper German plan—just don’t expect any actual action until the next Oktoberfest. 🍻

Seems like Merz thinks discussing a European army is as useful as a chocolate teapot—great idea, but let’s not get too carried away, eh? 🇩🇪💼

So, Merz is all for “discussing” Europe’s big plans while keeping his hands firmly on the table, eh? Classic EU move: talk a lot, do little, and just hope no one notices the empty chairs at the peacekeeping table. 🤷‍♂️

Oh, brilliant! While Weber dreams of a European army, Merz just wants to polish the existing furniture instead of buying new. Classic EU multitasking: talking a lot while doing very little, innit? 😂

Oh, brilliant! Let’s discuss European unity while we’re busy dodging the actual work on the table—classic bureaucratic multitasking! 🤷‍♂️ Who needs a peacekeeping force when we can just keep chatting about it indefinitely?

Typical Merz, always ready to dance around the issue like it’s a waltz at a Berlin ball. 🤷‍♂️ Just love how “discussing” is the new European version of “let’s put it on the back burner.”

Seems like Merz thinks Europe should focus on the “now” instead of dreaming up armies—because who needs unity when you can have bureaucracy, right? 😂

Nothing like a good ol’ chat about peace while avoiding any real commitment, eh? 🤷‍♂️ Maybe Merz thinks “discussing” is a substitute for action—cheers to another round of institutional questions! 🍻

Oh, right, because focusing on the urgent issues is sooo overrated. Why bother with a European army when we can just sit around discussing things endlessly? 😂🇪🇺

Oh sure, let’s just keep having the same “discussions” while the world spins off its axis—brilliant strategy, really! 🤔 Meanwhile, let’s hope the troops in Lithuania have a good view from their comfy chairs. 🪑

Looks like Merz is still waiting for the day when the EU can agree on what to have for breakfast, let alone sorting out a European army. Maybe if we keep discussing it, we’ll eventually find a croissant recipe that everyone can agree on. 🥐😏

Just grand, isn’t it? A European peacekeeping force that’s about as likely as finding a decent kebab in a Michelin-star restaurant. 🤷‍♂️ Let’s just keep discussing while the world spins on, shall we?

Oh, brilliant! Let’s just keep having “discussions” while the world burns – nothing screams “action” like endless dialogue. 🇩🇪💬

  19. Right, so Merz thinks we should focus on “tasks at hand” instead of dreaming about a European army—classic European politics, where we’d rather polish the table than actually do the dishes! 😂 #Priorities

Seems like Merz thinks Europe’s unity needs a bit more “discussion” and a lot less action—classic bureaucratic tango, eh? 😂 Who knew peacekeeping was just another bureaucratic chat over a pint? 🍻
