Slovenia Supports Classifying the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a Terrorist Organization

Brussels – Slovenia supports the decision to add the Iranian Revolutionary Guard to the European Union’s list of terrorist organizations, stated Slovenian Foreign and European Affairs Minister Tanja Fajon during the EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels. She highlighted that Slovenia intends to maintain diplomatic communication with Tehran.

Fajon noted that she did not oppose the inclusion of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard on the terrorist list during the meeting. She expressed confidence that this move would not adversely affect Slovenia’s diplomatic relations with Tehran, where Slovenia maintains an embassy.

“We certainly do not wish to sever diplomatic channels,” she emphasized, mentioning that her ministry is in daily contact with the embassy in Iran.

She also stated that Slovenia has communicated unequivocally to Iranian authorities on a bilateral basis regarding their actions and the expectations Slovenia has from them.

During the Brussels meeting, EU foreign ministers agreed to list the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization following the violent suppression of anti-government protests in Tehran earlier this month. They also imposed sanctions on those responsible for the crackdown, which resulted in thousands of casualties. (29 January)
