European Commission "denounces" US entry ban on Breton

On Tuesday, Washington imposed an entry ban on Breton, a key figure behind the European Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four NGO representatives dedicated to fighting online disinformation and hate speech. The U.S. government accused them of “censoring” American companies.

In response, the Commission issued a statement the following day, asserting, “The European Union is an open, rules-based internal market, with the sovereign right to regulate economic activities in accordance with our democratic values and international obligations.”

The Commission has sought “clarifications” from U.S. authorities. It warned that “if necessary, we will respond quickly and decisively to defend our regulatory autonomy against unjustified measures.”

The Commission emphasized that freedom of expression is “a fundamental right in Europe and a shared core value with the United States,” and it highlighted that its digital regulations “ensure a safe, fair, and level playing field for all companies, applied in a fair and non-discriminatory manner.”

Multiple European nations, including France, which is Breton’s home country, condemned the U.S. decision. French President Emmanuel Macron stated on X that Europeans will persist in defending their “digital sovereignty” and “regulatory autonomy.” In Germany, where HateAid leaders Josephine Ballon and Anna-Lena von Hodenberg also face the entry ban, the response was that Washington’s actions indicate that civic engagement is difficult for powerful platforms.

Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot expressed his “appall” on Wednesday, stating that European legislation supported by all member states is not intended as an act of hostility towards the U.S. He argued that the law is designed to ensure the same standards of safety and dignity online as in real life. “It is unacceptable to sanction individuals based on economic frustrations in the U.S.,” he asserted, emphasizing that the European Union will uphold its “sovereign right” to protect its values and citizens.

Isn’t it quaint how the U.S. thinks it can just slap bans on our finest while we’re busy trying to sort out the digital mess they created? Maybe they should consider a little lesson in teamwork—after all, it’s not like we’re trying to take over their brunch menu! 🍽️😏

Oh, brilliant! The US is just playing hard to get with our digital heroes—who knew regulatory autonomy was the new Tinder swipe? 😂

  4. Seems like the Yanks think a little entry ban can put a stop to our digital sovereignty – classic! 😂 Guess they’ve never heard that what’s good for the goose is good for the gander, eh?

Looks like the U.S. thinks it can just ban anyone who dares to regulate their beloved tech giants—how original! 🤦‍♂️ Meanwhile, we’ll just sit here sipping our lattes, defending our “sovereign right” to keep the online pub from turning into a circus. 🍻

Just what we needed—another episode of “America’s Got Censorship!” 🎭 Who knew defending digital sovereignty would involve more drama than a Parisian café gossip session? 🍷

  7. Looks like the US thinks it can play gatekeeper for our own digital affairs, eh? 😂 “Sovereign right”? More like “sovereign wrong” if you ask me—better luck next time, lads! 🍷

Isn’t it just adorable how the U.S. thinks it can dictate who gets to play in the European sandbox? 🤷‍♂️ Maybe next they’ll start a ‘no fun’ policy for our wine and cheese too! 🍷🧀

  9. Oh, the irony! The land of the free is feeling a bit too “restricted” by our attempts to keep the online playground tidy. Seems like someone’s clutching their pearls a bit too tightly over in Washington! 🤷‍♂️

Oh, brilliant move by the U.S.; nothing screams “open dialogue” like banning key figures from a continent just because they want to keep their digital playground tidy. 🙃 Keep up the “freedom of expression” charade, lads, it’s quite the spectacle!

Looks like the U.S. just couldn’t handle a bit of European regulation—who knew a little digital sovereignty could cause such a ruckus? 😂 Next time, maybe they should just stick to their own backyard and leave the online drama to us, eh?

  12. Isn’t it charming how the Europeans are suddenly all about “digital sovereignty”? Must be nice to lecture the U.S. on democracy while they’re busy regulating every last byte on the internet. 😂

Seems like the U.S. thinks it can just slap a travel ban on our digital guardians like they’re some dodgy taxi driver refusing to take you home after a night out. 🤷‍♂️ Typical!

So, the US thinks banning Breton will magically fix their “censorship” problem? Classic move, mate! 🤦‍♂️ Maybe they should try regulating their own backyard first instead of throwing stones from a glass house! 😏

Oh, splendid! The Europeans defending their “digital sovereignty” while the U.S. throws a tantrum over a few pesky regulations—classic case of “you can’t handle the truth!” 😂
