Fico Declines Support for EU Military Aid to Ukraine

Bratislava – Prime Minister Robert Fico of the Slovak Republic (Smer-SD) has announced that he will not endorse any measures to increase military spending for Ukraine at the forthcoming EU summit in Brussels. This statement was made during Question Time in the National Council (NC) of Slovakia on Thursday, where he emphasized the country’s commitment to providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine and supporting its aspirations for EU membership, according to TASR.

“I cannot and will not support any resolution that entails the Slovak Republic contributing to military spending for Ukraine. I respect each EU member state’s sovereign right to make its own decisions voluntarily,” stated Robert Fico.

Fico reiterated his stance in a letter addressed to the President of the European Council, António Costa. He expressed that he believes there is no military solution to the conflict in Ukraine and criticized the EU’s approach as flawed and ineffective. He remarked that the ongoing war results in unnecessary loss of life without enhancing Ukraine’s standing in potential peace talks.

As a result, he endorses peace initiatives aimed at ending the conflict, including those proposed by US President Donald Trump.

Fico also noted that the upcoming European Council will include discussions regarding the proposed ban on the production and sale of combustion engine vehicles after 2035. He stressed the need for European countries to urge the European Commission (EC) to reconsider the ban, advocating for the continued sale of both electric and alternative-fueled vehicles, including hybrids. (11 December)

“Under no pressure will I support any solution to support Ukraine’s military spending in which the Slovak Republic should participate.” Robert Fico
