Outermost Regions Urge EU to Address New Multiannual Financial Framework

Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Spain) – The Conference of Presidents of the Outermost Regions (OMR) has called on their respective governments and the European Council to engage in discussions regarding the new EU multiannual financial framework. This request arises from concerns expressed by these regions concerning the Commission’s proposal, as reported by the regional government of the Canary Islands (Atlantic, Spain) this Friday.

The President of Guadeloupe (Caribbean, France) has invited the heads of state of the EU member countries relevant to these territories—France, Portugal, and Spain—along with the European Council, to join in discussions. This invitation is supported by a political declaration regarding the future multiannual financial framework, which was signed by the presidents of the nine OMR on November 17 in Brussels.

The OMR is advocating for “a differentiated European strategy” and specific measures deemed “essential for restoration and reinforcement.”

Leaders of the OMR assert that “acknowledging the structural cost overruns associated with outermost regions must remain a cornerstone of European action, resulting in concrete, stable, and dedicated budget allocations from the EU that are tied to programs tailored and managed at a regional level.” They also highlight the vital importance of these regions to Europe.

The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, stressed the need for the involvement of the European Council. He pointed out that “it is the only body capable of vetoing the current proposal for the 2028-2034 period, which threatens the status of the OMR by centralizing funds that were previously directly managed with the territories to address the cost overruns linked to their remoteness and distinctiveness.” (November 28)

Guess it’s time for the Outermost Regions to play a little game of “Who Can Scream the Loudest” to get the EU’s attention. 🤷‍♂️ Next stop: Brussels for a spot of tea and some serious budget wrangling! 🍵💸

Seems like the Outermost Regions have a classic case of “please, sir, may I have some more?” 🤷‍♂️ Who knew asking for EU funds could be so dramatic – it’s not like they’re asking for a round of free tapas at the local pub! 🍷

Looks like the Outermost Regions are really pushing for a financial framework upgrade—because who doesn’t love a good discussion while the rest of us are just trying to keep our heads above water? 😂 Talk about a “differentiated strategy,” as if the EU didn’t have enough bureaucracy already!

Oh, brilliant! Just what we need—more bureaucratic discussions about financial frameworks. Because nothing says ‘we care’ like a nice chat while the islands are left dangling, right? 😏💸

Looks like the Outermost Regions are really putting the “fun” in “funding discussions” – who knew financial frameworks could bring everyone together like a Eurovision final? 🎤💸

Seems like the OMR is asking the EU for a financial makeover—because nothing says “we care” quite like a multiannual framework discussion, right? 😂 Better grab the popcorn; this should be a riveting watch! 🍿

Looks like the Outermost Regions are throwing a little soirée to beg for their piece of the EU pie. Who knew budget discussions could be the hottest ticket in town? 🍰

  10. Looks like the Outermost Regions have finally found their voices—who knew they were so passionate about money? Maybe they think the EU should just print more euros while they’re at it. 💸😏

Looks like the Outermost Regions are pulling out the big guns to beg for some cash, eh? Maybe they’ll even get a fancy EU meeting where they can all sip espresso and complain about being “out of sight, out of mind.” 😂💸
