Slovenia Showcases Nova Gorica-Gorizia as the European Capital of Culture in Brussels

Brussels – At a recent meeting of culture ministers, Slovenia’s State Secretary for Culture, Marko Rusjan, unveiled the European Capital of Culture (EPK) 2025 initiative, which will jointly feature the Slovenian city of Nova Gorica and the Italian city of Gorizia. This marks a historic first as two cities from different countries collaborate to share a single title. Rusjan highlighted the significance of the cross-border nature of this project during his presentation.

“Our goal is to underscore the value of cross-border collaboration. In light of the recent reinstatement of border controls in certain areas – including the suspension of Schengen at the Italian-Slovenian border – this initiative holds great importance for local residents accustomed to life near the border,” stated the state secretary.

Stojan Pelko, the program director for EPK 2025, pointed out that the ongoing temporary border restrictions between Italy and Slovenia means that the slogan “Let’s Go! Boundless” represents a mission rather than a reality at this time.

“Through the numerous projects currently being developed between these two cities and their respective countries, we are fostering connections that cannot be easily undone by political decisions,” he remarked following the press conference on EPK 2025 at Slovenia’s permanent representation to the EU.

Among the key messages of EPK Nova Gorica-Gorica, Pelko emphasized the historical context of the region, which endured two wars during the 20th century yet has managed to rebuild and thrive in new circumstances.

EPK Nova Gorica-Gorica is set to officially launch on February 8, coinciding with Slovenia’s cultural holiday. Organizers anticipate presenting around 400 official program events alongside a similar number of additional activities. (November 26)

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “let’s celebrate cross-border unity” quite like a cultural initiative launched amid border checks – I can already hear the sound of bureaucrats patting themselves on the back while the locals scratch their heads. 🥳 #BoundlessIndeed
