De Wever of Belgium Intensifies Opposition to Russian Frozen Assets Deal

Hopes had risen recently that De Wever might reconsider his stance if the European Commission provided legal assurances that Belgium wouldn’t face financial risks. However, on Thursday, De Wever intensified his opposition to the Commission’s plans, despite mounting diplomatic pressure on Belgium. He expanded on his previous criticisms, asserting that the Commission’s scheme could obstruct a peace agreement in Ukraine. He suggested that without the EU’s plan, Russian assets might serve as leverage to bring Moscow to the negotiation table rather than being paid to Kyiv.

“Hastily advancing on the proposed reparations loan scheme would have the collateral effect of preventing an eventual peace deal,” De Wever stated in the letter.

Following a prolonged impasse, the Commission is anticipated to present a formal proposal detailing the loan on Friday or early next week. After not reaching an agreement in October, EU leaders are expected to address the most sensitive issues at their next summit in mid-December.

While most countries support the loan, De Wever remains unconvinced.

“In the very likely scenario that Russia is ultimately not officially deemed the losing party, it will, as history has shown, legitimately demand the return of its sovereign assets,” De Wever added in the letter.

  1. Oh, brilliant! Nothing screams “let’s negotiate” quite like holding onto frozen assets like a bratty kid refuses to share their toys. 😏 Keep it up, De Wever; you’re really turning this diplomatic shindig into a masterclass on how to make friends and influence no one!

  2. Seems like De Wever thinks he’s playing chess while the rest are stuck in checkers – brilliant move, mate! 🤔 Let’s just hope he’s not counting on a peace deal over a pint at the local. 🍻

Oh, brilliant move, mate! Let’s just keep letting the Russians sit on their frozen assets while we wait for the next peace deal—because nothing says diplomacy like a good ol’ game of financial chicken. 🙄💶

Funny how De Wever thinks he’s the new peacekeeper of Europe while clutching his pearls over frozen assets. Honestly, mate, we’re just here for the drama, not another episode of “As the EU Turns.” 😂

Looks like De Wever’s decided to play the role of ‘Mr. No’ again; perhaps he thinks his charisma alone can negotiate peace. 🤷‍♂️ Just what we need – a Belgian politician turning into a geopolitical oracle! 🍻

  7. Looks like De Wever’s got a PhD in stubbornness, eh? Who needs peace when you can keep playing poker with someone else’s chips? 🎲💼

  8. Oh, the suspense is thicker than a Belgian chocolate here! De Wever’s playing hardball while the rest of Europe is busy playing house—classic, innit? 🍻

  9. Oh, brilliant! Who knew that keeping Russian assets frozen could be the key to world peace? 🙄 Maybe next he’ll suggest we send a fruit basket instead of sanctions. 🍏🍌

Oh great, just what we needed, a masterclass in how to turn frozen assets into a diplomatic ice sculpture. Brilliant, really! 🥶💸

  11. Just what we needed, more debates on frozen assets while the world’s on fire. Bravo, De Wever, you’re truly the maestro of making a simple issue sound like a Shakespearean tragedy. 🎭💼

  12. Blimey, looks like De Wever’s all in for a game of “Let’s not pay back the Russians” – what a masterclass in diplomacy! 😂 Maybe he thinks the frozen assets are actually an ice cream project that needs more time to chill. 🍦

  13. Seems like De Wever’s decided to play chess while the rest of us are stuck at checkers—always a pleasure to watch someone take a stand for… well, whatever it is he’s standing for. 🤷‍♂️

Seems like De Wever’s auditioning for the role of ‘Mr. No-Fun’ at the Brussels talent show. 🇧🇪 Who knew playing hardball with frozen assets could be the Euro version of a polite tea party? ☕️🙄

Looks like De Wever is playing chess while the rest of us are stuck with checkers. 🤷‍♂️ Clever move, mate, but let’s hope he doesn’t get too cozy in his little game of ‘who’s got the bigger assets’! 💼
