The coalition, an alliance including France, Germany, Britain, Belgium, Canada, Turkey, and others, formed recently due to European concerns about America’s support for Ukraine. Members, like France and the U.K., have offered different levels of support, including sending national troops to enforce the deal and deter Russian aggression.
The group has considered a “reassurance force” offering air and naval support to Ukraine and aims to rejuvenate Ukraine’s military. A U.K. spokesperson stated they’re willing to deploy troops to secure peace, while Macron emphasized that this force would stay “far from the frontline,” potentially stationed in Kyiv or Odessa. He also mentioned an air reassurance force based in neighboring countries to assist the Ukrainian air force.
Macron reassured the public, saying: “We shouldn’t sow panic,” recognizing domestic apprehension about immediate troop deployment, which he denied. Germany remains cautious, with Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul citing Germany’s existing brigade in Lithuania as part of its substantial regional involvement, which he considers “sufficient.”
There are questions about the U.S.’s role and the effectiveness of European forces. Russia has dismissed a Europe-backed peace plan.
