Washington Anxiously Awaits the Next Chapter in the Epstein Saga

Washington (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Washington awaits with heightened anticipation the next phase in the Jeffrey Epstein saga after Congress passed a bill demanding the release of all Justice Department files related to Epstein. The political drama centers around President Donald Trump’s hesitancy to sign the bill and the Justice Department’s commitment, amid uncertainty, to comply.

The Congressional Push for Epstein Files Release

As reported by Oliver Darcy of CNN, the United States Congress displayed overwhelming bipartisan support for transparency in the Epstein investigation, passing legislation with a 427-1 vote in the House and unanimous Senate consent. This bill mandates the Justice Department release all investigative files, documents, and related materials on Jeffrey Epstein within 30 days.

Following this decisive vote, Washington is now on tenterhooks waiting for President Donald Trump’s signature to enact the law. Trump, despite his late endorsement of the bill, has shown hesitation, caught in a political quandary over divulging potentially damaging documents.

The Political Tensions Surrounding the Bill

Trump’s reluctance to sign the bill contrasts with the overwhelming congressional demand for transparency. Analysts note the bill’s passage puts Trump in a difficult position since a veto would almost certainly be overridden, increasing scrutiny of his administration’s handling of Epstein-related evidence.

Critics and survivors of Epstein’s abuse have expressed concern that Trump and his Justice Department may seek to delay or obstruct the release of files. Pam Bondi, Trump’s Attorney General, has been a focal point of frustration. According to Darcy of CNN, Bondi’s public remarks have been vague, stating she will “follow the law while protecting maximum transparency,” but failing to clarify specifics, thus deepening uncertainty about imminent actions.

Republican dissent within Congress, largely vocal but unable to stop the bill, draws attention to a politically fraught landscape. Trump’s administration reportedly mounted last-minute efforts to influence Republican representatives to block votes on key petitions related to the Epstein documents.

Justice Department’s Handling of Epstein Files

The Justice Department has previously taken a defensive stance on releasing additional Epstein files. As noted by Gina Cherelus of Business Insider, back in mid-2025, the DOJ and FBI declared no further disclosures were appropriate despite ongoing public and media pressure. The department has also been slow or unresponsive to Freedom of Information Act requests concerning Epstein records.

Elon Musk’s public accusation that Trump is withholding files due to personal connections intensified scrutiny on the administration. Business Insider revealed the DOJ inspector general has a backlog of requests and limited resources, delaying further document review and release.

Trump’s Move to Redirect Investigation Focus

Adding a further layer of complexity, President Trump announced on social media that he had instructed Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate Epstein’s ties to prominent figures including Bill Clinton, Larry Summers, and Reid Hoffman. This move is widely interpreted as an effort to shift political pressure away from himself by implicating others in the Epstein network.

This strategy has drawn criticism for politicising the investigation. Opponents label it a diversionary tactic designed to undermine Democratic-led efforts pushing for full disclosure. Analysts observe that it complicates the saga’s political and legal dynamics at a critical juncture.

Congressional Oversight and Subpoena Actions

In parallel, as per the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, chaired by James Comer, subpoenas have been issued seeking unredacted Epstein estate documents and communications. The committee continues its review of potential mismanagement of federal Epstein investigations, the circumstances around Epstein’s death, and federal responses to sex trafficking rings.

Committee leadership emphasises the
