Brussels’ MIVB Unveils 42m New Generation Tram from Alstom

Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Brussels’ MIVB unveiled the new 42-meter Tram New Generation (TNG) from Alstom, Vienna, on Nov 18, 2025, set to enter service in 2026 after completing tests for safety, performance, and network compatibility.

As VRT News reported, Brussels’ public transport company MIVB/STIB has introduced a new, longer Tram New Generation (TNG). The tram was built at Alstom’s factory in Vienna, Austria and arrived at the Haren de.

pot on November 18th, 2025. The new tram can carry more passengers than the shorter model. MIVB says the tram is designed to make commuting more convenient and comfortable for everyone.

How is Brussels’ MIVB upgrading public transport with the new 42m TNG?

The new Tram New Generation (TNG) still needs to complete several important tests before it starts regular service. Officials will check its compatibility with STIB’s infrastructure, test its braking performance, and assess the communication and dispatch systems. The heating system will also be tested to ensure it works properly.

“Everything must be in perfect order before the vehicle can be put into service,”

MIVB said.

Officials mentioned that the TNG is designed to give passengers more space and comfort. It has wide doors and a low-floor design. The tram is also designed to improve access for people with reduced mobility. Inside, the layout is planned to enhance passenger flow and reduce congestion during busy periods.

“The tram has multifunctional spaces for wheelchair users and strollers, and the seating arrangement provides greater comfort on longer journeys,”

MIVB said.

Brussels’ public transport company STIB/MIVB is renewing its tram fleet with the Tram New Generation (TNG). The first TNG was delivered to the Haren depot in October 2021, followed by a second tram in April 2022 for testing. After months of trials, the first TNG started carrying passengers on line 51 in April 2023.

The tram’s design, created by Yellow Window, is inspired by Art Nouveau and won a Red Dot design award in June 2023. In total, STIB plans to introduce 90 TNG trams to improve capacity, comfort, and accessibility across Brussels’ network.

  1. Just what Brussels needed, another lengthy tram that’s still got to pass a million tests before it even thinks about picking up a passenger. Guess we’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed for the next decade or so! 🚋💨

  2. Oh look, a tram so long it could probably double as a city bus 😏! I suppose it’s great for those who enjoy a bit of a workout just to find a seat—if it ever gets into service, that is. 🚋💨

Oh, brilliant! Just what Brussels needs—a 42-meter tram that still needs to pass a million tests before it can take us anywhere. The only thing longer than the tram itself is probably the wait time to ride it! 😂

Just what we needed, a 42m tram that might be ready for service sometime in the next century! 🚋 If only it could also brew coffee while we wait for those tests to finish… 😂
