Tile Tableau Discovered at Vissersstraat in Blankenberge During Demolition

Blankenberg (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Workers in Blankenberge uncovered a 5×3 meter historic tile tableau at Vissersstraat and Bakkersstraat. Made by a Wigmaal manufacturer, it will be removed on Friday, Nov 21, 2025, and restored for public display.

As VRT News reported, workers in Blankenberge, in the province of West Flanders, Belgium, discovered a large historic tile tableau during demolition work at the corner of Vissersstraat and Bakkersstraat. 7 old buildings are being torn down at the site. The tableau measures 5 meters wide and 3 meters high.

When will Blankenberge’s Wigmaal tile Tableau be restored?

The city is taking action to protect the artwork. A specialised company will remove the tiles on Friday, Nov 21, 2025. After that, the tiles will be restored with care. The restoration will preserve the colours and the details. The final location for the tableau has not been decided. Officials want the public to see it once the restoration is complete. Residents and visitors will be able to enjoy the artwork.

The tile tableau in Blankenberge was created in the early 20th century and produced by a tile manufacturer from Wigmaal. It was placed on the front of a shop that sold games and poultry. It depicted scenes of the game that served as both decoration and advertisements. Such decorations were commonplace at the time in many Flemish towns. Many have been lost over the years due to renovations or demolished buildings.
