Conference on Interdisciplinary Approaches to Religious Diversity and Globalization

COIMBRA, 17 November 2025, Amphitheatro III, The Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Coimbra (Portugal). The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master “Religious Diversity in a Globalised World,” supported by Centro de Estudos Clássicos e Humanísticos (CECH), launches the inaugural Interdisciplinary Think Tank on Religious Diversity and Globalisation Conference.

The three-day event convenes keynote speakers, diplomats, multidisciplinary scholars, philanthropists, and NGOs. Lautaro Roig Lanzillotta, ReD Global Director and Professor of Early Christian Studies at the University of Groningen (The Netherlands) and Gulbenkian Visiting Professor at CECH, will open the conference with discussions on diversity from antiquity to the present.

“In a globalised world, religious traditions should not be seen merely as rigid systems of dogma. They embody dynamic forces capable of transforming societies, contributing positively to human coexistence.” Lanzillotta emphasizes the importance of academic spaces to overcome enduring prejudices.

The conference will include five panels discussing “Religion and Global Affairs,” “Faith, Values, and Social Media,” “Religious Freedom, Human Rights, and Legal Regulations,” “Peace, Development, and Governance,” and “Early Christian Diversity and Intertextuality.”

In addition to promoting the ReD Global Project, the conference aims to tackle challenges related to religious diversity and set a roadmap for future collaboration in both professional and academic fields.

The ReD Global project operates on multiple levels to translate religious knowledge into practical solutions, fostering a tolerant, diverse, and meaningful dialogue. The event will also mark the launch of the ReD Global Platform — an online hub for collective efforts by like-minded partners to empower future scholars and active citizens.

About ReD Global:

The ReD Global Master’s Programme is a joint initiative of nine European and Latin American universities. It combines theoretical exploration of religious diversity with practical engagement through partnerships with non-academic organizations. The project confronts issues like religious conflicts and migration, led by the University of Groningen (The Netherlands), University of Coimbra, and University of Cordoba (Spain), offering unique content and character.
