Ukraine boasts Europe’s most seasoned military, offering invaluable support to fellow allies. Kubilius’s appeal arises as earlier commitments to welcome Ukraine into NATO falter due to opposition from the U.S. and other allies.
Kubilius, a former Lithuanian prime minister, emphasized that deploying Ukrainian forces wouldn’t compromise Germany’s efforts in sending an armored brigade to Lithuania, the presence of U.S. troops in the area, or NATO’s Article 5 on common defense.
“We Lithuanians learned from our history that having multiple security assurances is better,” he said, suggesting that NATO’s Article 5 should be reinforced by the EU’s security measures “with a clear implementation mechanism.”
