Orbán contests EU in court regarding Russian gas import ban

BUDAPEST (ANP/AFP) – Starting at the end of 2027, the entire EU will enforce a ban on Russian gas imports. Hungary rejects this decision, as stated by Orbán on Friday. The government plans to challenge this ruling in the European Court of Justice.

Hungary, along with Slovakia, remains significantly reliant on energy imports from Russia and maintains a pro-Kremlin stance.

This adds to the ongoing tensions between Budapest and Brussels. Hungary frequently utilizes its veto power within the EU or threatens to do so concerning new sanctions packages against Russia, resulting in delays or obstacles in EU decision-making if its demands are unmet.

Orbán also opposes financial aid for Ukraine and is against the country’s EU accession.
