Belgium’s Gen. Verbist Resigns Over Trump Critique, Francken Confirms

Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Belgium’s military attaché to the U.S., Major General Frank Verbist, resigned this week after Pentagon concerns over his Belgian Military Journal article criticising Trump’s policies, confirmed by Defence Minister Theo Francken.

As VRT News reported, Belgium’s military representative in the United States, Major General Frank Verbist, has resigned after criticising former U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies. The resignation was confirmed by the office of Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken (N-VA).

Multiple sources say Verbist stepped down this week following a breach of trust with the Pentagon. He has been given several weeks to leave the country. The decision comes amid tensions between Belgian and U.S. military officials.

“His statements about President Donald Trump are being held against him.”

What led Belgium’s Gen. Verbist to resign over Trump critique?

The resignation is linked to an article Verbist wrote in the Belgian Military Journal, a monthly magazine published by the Belgian Armed Forces. The full article has not been made public online.

“The first six months of President Trump’s second term have been brutal and have undoubtedly ushered in a new chapter in international relations,”

the newsletter states.

“Brigadier General Bart Verbist explains in no uncertain terms how the United States has embarked on a clear course change under President Trump, both in domestic politics and foreign policy.”

According to the newsletter, this change of course is

“primarily characterised by chaos and unpredictability.” “It’s unclear whether the many changes are driven by a well-thought-out strategic vision or rather by a one-day policy, where Trump governs according to a 24-hour news cycle and constantly strives to grab the headlines.”

Sources indicate that the case has involved high-level Pentagon officials, including the team around U.S. Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth. The situation highlights the delicate role of military representatives abroad. They must provide professional analysis while maintaining trust with allied countries.

Belgium has maintained a military attaché in Washington since at least the early years of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, with Belgium’s defence missions to the United States forming a key part of trans‑Atlantic military cooperation through the 1950s, 1960s and beyond.

These roles evolved in the context of Belgium hosting major NATO institutions in Brussels and cooperating closely with Washington on European defence and security matters. Over time, the Belgian military mission in the U.S. has reflected Belgium’s broader strategy of engagement within NATO and its role as an ally in global operations.

Looks like Major General Verbist took “free speech” a tad too seriously—who knew criticizing the man with the golden hair could lead to a one-way ticket out of the States? 🤷‍♂️ Typical, isn’t it? One minute you’re writing articles, the next you’re polishing your résumé for the next Brussels gig.

  2. Looks like Gen. Verbist has discovered the hard way that in the land of waffles and fries, criticizing the big cheese across the pond is a recipe for getting your marching orders. 🤷‍♂️ Classic case of “stick to the chocolate, mate!” 🍫

Funny how a bit of honesty about a certain orange chap can lead to a one-way ticket home. But hey, in the world of diplomacy, who needs truth when you’ve got formalities, right? 😂✈️

Looks like General Verbist really stepped in it this time—who knew criticizing a reality TV star could get you the boot? 😂 Classic case of “keep your opinions to yourself, mate!”

Oh, lovely! Who knew that criticizing a reality TV star turned politician could be a career-ending move? Guess it’s safer to stick to discussing the weather than politics in the land of waffles and frites. 🍟😏

So, a Belgian general criticizes Trump and gets shown the door—who knew honesty could be such a risky business? 🙈 Just another day in the land of waffles and diplomatic drama, I suppose! 🍻

Seems like Major General Verbist took a page from that old Belgian classic: “If you can’t stand the heat, resign.” 🍻 Guess the only thing more unpredictable than Trump’s policies is the career longevity of anyone daring to critique them!

Typical, innit? One minute, you’re a general in the land of waffles, the next you’re fired for speaking the truth about a reality TV star’s ‘leadership’ style. 😂

  15. Looks like Gen. Verbist took “freedom of speech” a tad too literally – who knew critiquing the big cheese across the pond could get you kicked out of your own country? 🤷‍♂️ Best pack your bags and don’t forget the waffles! 🧳🥞

Just when you thought Belgian waffles were the only thing getting a rise out of us, our General goes and critiques the orange overlord. 🍊 One can only hope his next gig involves less ‘politics’ and more ‘moules-frites’!

Looks like General Verbist thought he could toss a few opinions around without the Pentagon noticing—classic Belgian overconfidence, eh? 🤷‍♂️ Time to trade critiques for waffles, mate! 🍻

  20. Looks like Gen. Verbist decided to retire from his critique of Trump; guess his freedom of speech didn’t come with a side of job security, eh? 😂 Typical Belgian – stirring the pot and then getting the lid slammed shut!
