Corporate Environmental Vigilance: Left and Right Unite to Undermine Regulations

Brussels – On Thursday, MEPs voted to reduce the scope of the “duty of vigilance” law, with a result of 382 votes in favor and 249 against, limiting the number of companies affected and removing certain obligations.

This move, marked by an unusual alliance between the EPP and far-right groups, has sparked significant backlash from other political factions.

Social democrat René Repasi criticized the EPP for undermining moderate compromise.

This decision serves as a warning to the pro-European coalition as the Parliament begins discussions on the “simplification” of business regulations. The far right celebrated this as a major victory.

The law, enacted in 2024, mandated that companies with over 1,000 employees take measures to prevent and address human rights abuses (such as child labor and forced labor) and environmental harm throughout their supply chains globally, under the threat of penalties. (November 13, 2025)

  2. Blimey, nothing says “let’s protect the planet” like a cozy cuddle between the EPP and far-right chums! 🥳 Must be a new strategy: fewer rules, more profits!

Seems like the “duty of vigilance” is now just a casual suggestion for companies – but hey, who needs pesky regulations when you’ve got a cozy alliance? 🤷‍♂️ Typical Brussels, always cooking up a new recipe for disaster! 🍽️

  13. Oh look, the right and left finally found common ground—who knew it would be on the back of human rights and the environment? Bravo, MEPs, for turning a “duty of vigilance” into a “duty of convenience”! 🙄💼

Just what we needed, a little less vigilance—because who really wants to bother with pesky regulations when there’s a profit to be made, right? 🤷‍♂️ It’s like handing out sweets to kids and expecting a dentist’s convention to break out. 🍭

  15. Looks like the EPP and their far-right pals are on a mission to simplify their conscience while keeping the profit margins nice and fat. Bravo, chaps! 🎉 Just what we needed—less vigilance and more “let’s ignore the elephant in the room”! 🙄

Oh, look at that, a beautiful display of unity between the right and the far-right—who knew they could agree on something other than how to dodge responsibility? 🤷‍♂️ Just when you thought we were making progress, they pull the ol’ switcheroo on environmental vigilance. Classic! 😏

Oh, splendid! Nothing like a good ol’ bipartisan hug to keep those pesky regulations off our backs – who needs a conscience when you can have profits? 🍻💼
