Turnhout (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Turnhout councillor Achraf El Yakhlouf (Vooruit) urges more study spaces as the library is overcrowded. Alderman Luc Op de Beck notes that 250 spots exist, but awareness and communication need improvement.
As VRT News reported, Turnhout city council member Achraf El Yakhlouf of Vooruit is calling for more study spaces in the city. He says students often have trouble finding quiet places to focus on their work.
He mentioned that at the same time, many spaces in the city centre are not being fully used. Locations such as the youth centre, local businesses, churches, and mosques could become study areas.
El Yakhlouf adds that opening these locations could benefit both students and the city. It could help improve learning while bringing more activity to the city centre. The initiative could also connect schools, local organisations, and residents.
“Exam season is coming up again, and we see that the library is always overcrowded,”
says city council member Ashraf El Yakhlouf.
“I brought this up yesterday at the city council committee. On the one hand, we need more places, but on the other hand, we also need better communication about the places that are already available.”
“I speak to a lot of young people every day, and they tell me they don’t know there are other places besides the library. So there should be more attention paid to this – through social media, for example.”
“Wouldn’t it be nice if young people could study with entrepreneurs, or in churches and mosques?”
Ashraf El Yakhlouf, municipal councillor Vooruit
What can Turnhout do to ease library crowding with more study spaces?
El Yakhlouf says well-equipped and attractive study areas can help students perform better, encourage social interaction, and make studying more effective.
“We also see that young people motivate and help each other by studying together. We can only encourage that.”
Luc Op de Beck, Turnhout’s Alderman for Education, says the city currently has about 250 study places. He adds that it is important to investigate if more spaces are needed.
“We do see that the library is often full and more popular than other places. It’s a very pleasant place. We can certainly explore making the other places more attractive as well.”
Op de Beck also points out that Thomas More and local service centres offer study areas, but they may not be well known to all students. Both officials agree that raising awareness of these spaces and possibly adding new ones could make Turnhout more student-friendly.
“We’re currently primarily informing people about them through traditional media. That’s why I’ve instructed our communications department to also focus more on the social media channels where young people are

Seems like the library’s become the hottest club in Turnhout 🎉—who knew cramming for exams came with a side of overcrowding? Maybe we should just hand out flyers at the local markets… or do the young’uns not know what paper is anymore? 😂📚

Brilliant move, lads! Why not just open the local pub as a study space too? Nothing says “concentration” like a pint and a group of mates! 🍻📚

A study in a church? Brilliant! Nothing like a bit of divine intervention to help with those pesky exam questions! 📚✝️

Oh, brilliant idea! Let’s turn every spare nook in Turnhout into a study haven. Who wouldn’t want to hit the books in a youth centre or a church? Sounds like a recipe for success, innit? 😂📚

Now there’s a groundbreaking idea: let’s turn the local churches and youth centres into study havens! Because nothing screams “focus” like cramming for exams in a place where the ambiance might just be too heavenly 🙄.

Seems like the library’s the hottest club in Turnhout, but who needs a quiet place to study when you can just mingle with the youth at a church, right? 😂🕍

Oh sure, let’s just turn the local church into a study hall, because nothing says “focus” quite like the sound of a choir warming up next door. 🙄📚 Who needs quiet when you can have a side of divine inspiration?

If only we could cram more folks into the library, eh? Maybe a bit of social media magic and some church pews could turn this academic circus into a real study fair! 😂📚
-
Oh, brilliant! Why not just turn the local churches and mosques into study havens while we’re at it? I can see it now: “Holy wisdom and exam prep in one divine swoop!” 🙏📚

Ah, the library’s packed to the brim, and yet we need to “investigate” where to put more desks. Maybe just stick a sign on a church door and call it a day? 😏📚

Oh, brilliant idea! Let’s turn churches and mosques into study havens while we’re at it—because nothing says “focused study environment” like the sound of church bells and the call to prayer! 😅📚

Oh, brilliant idea—let’s just turn every nook and cranny in town into a study hub! Next, we’ll have the baker selling croissants with a side of calculus. 🍞📚

So, we’ve got 250 study spots but still need a seminar on ‘how to find them’? Classic! Maybe we should just put up a big sign: “Welcome, students! Libraries are so last year! 📚🚫”

Oh, brilliant idea! Because nothing screams “study haven” like a youth centre filled with the sound of younglings and the aroma of stale coffee. 🤦♂️ If only there was a way to make libraries just a tad bit less *popular*!

Isn’t it just charming how our libraries are as crowded as a Brussels tram during rush hour? Perhaps if we turned churches into study havens, we could finally have a quiet place to ponder life’s big mysteries—like why no one knows about the 250 study spots available! 😏📚
