Genocide Prevention Expert Raises Alarm Over Alleged Atrocities in Sudan

“We see massive violations of international human rights law, direct attacks against civilians, and non-compliance with international humanitarian law, with attacks largely targeting civilians,” stated Chaloka Beyani, the new Special Advisor to the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide.

Mr. Beyani informed UN News in an interview that he communicated with Denise Brown, the resident coordinator in Sudan, and plans to issue an advisory to Secretary-General António Guterres, the Security Council, and the entire United Nations system.

“Once our office sounds the alarm, the alarm goes beyond ordinary violations of human rights or international humanitarian law,” he explained. “This indicates that the threshold is about to be crossed and urgent action is needed.”

Graphic and video evidence began circulating online at the end of last month, suggesting war crimes by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, which took control of Darfur’s capital, El Fasher, from government troops after a prolonged siege.

“We don’t hear the screams, but the horror continues,” said UN relief chief Tom Fletcher, presenting to the Security Council on October 31.

Mr. Beyani’s office noted indicators of atrocity crimes risk in Sudan but emphasized that only an international tribunal or legal body can determine genocide’s existence.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) expressed concern about reports of massacres, rapes, and other crimes in El Fasher, highlighting ongoing investigations into alleged war crimes since April 2023.

“As part of the ongoing investigation, the office is taking immediate action to preserve and collect evidence for future prosecutions,” stated the prosecutor’s office.

The RSF reportedly agreed to a “humanitarian ceasefire” following criticism of its fighters’ actions around El Fasher. Militia leaders agreed to a truce proposed by the United States, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Meanwhile, the UN warns of a worsening humanitarian situation in North Darfur, where displaced families from El Fasher face dire conditions. “In and around Tawila, displaced people lack adequate food, clean water, shelter, or medical care,” said UN deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq.

Humanitarian agencies, with local partners, are establishing new camps for over 650,000 people in Tawila. In Tawila Al Omda, more than 3,000 new arrivals urgently need plastic sheeting, mats, and blankets as temperatures drop.

Many, including the injured, disabled, and unaccompanied children, sleep outside. Similar conditions impact over 6,500 people in Daba Al Naira and Um Jangour camps.

Isn’t it just delightful when a genocide prevention expert finally decides to wake up and smell the coffee? 🙄 Meanwhile, the rest of us are still waiting for someone to invent a time machine to fix all this mess.

Oh great, another expert with a knack for stating the obvious—who needs a crystal ball when you have the UN, right? 🤦‍♂️ Just what we need: more alarm bells while the world looks on, sipping their lattes and pretending it’s just another Tuesday.

Oh great, another UN expert raising the alarm—because obviously, ringing bells has worked wonders in the past. 🙄 Just what we needed, more meetings and reports while the folks on the ground are left to fend for themselves!

Nothing like a bit of genocide prevention chatter to spice up the day, right? I mean, who doesn’t love a little alarm ringing while the world turns a blind eye? 😏

Not that we didn’t see this coming, but a genocide prevention expert raising alarms is about as surprising as a rainy day in London. 🙄 Hope they’ve packed their best suits for the UN meeting—might need them for all the handshakes and “thoughts and prayers.”

Oh, fantastic! Just what we needed, another genius telling us the sky is falling while the rest of us are busy sorting out our morning croissants. 🍞 If only the world took tips from our local pub on how to solve problems over a pint instead of playing the “let’s wait for an advisory” game. 🥴

Isn’t it just delightful how we need an expert to tell us that attacking civilians might be a tad problematic? 🤔 I suppose next they’ll be holding a seminar on “How Not to Commit Atrocities 101.”

Seems like Sudan’s getting a masterclass in “how to win friends and influence people”… Except it’s all wrong, innit? 🤦‍♂️ Just another day in paradise, eh? 🌍

Seems like the UN is on the case again – I can hardly wait for the next round of alarm bells. Maybe next time they’ll bring a cake to celebrate their “urgent action” while the rest of us deal with the mess they preach about. 🍰😒

  10. Oh, brilliant! Just what the world needed—a genocide prevention expert to raise alarms while the rest of us are busy trying to find a decent coffee in a crisis. 🙄☕️

Just what Sudan needed, another expert to sound the alarm while the world enjoys its morning coffee. 😂 Maybe if we all pretend hard enough, the humanitarian crises will just sort themselves out, right?

  12. Isn’t it just charming how a ‘genocide prevention expert’ is ringing alarm bells while the world shrugs and finishes its espresso? 🍵 Guess some folks prefer to keep their heads in the sand rather than facing the music about Sudan.

Looks like Sudan’s turned into a real life horror movie, yet all we’ve got is a half-hearted shout from the UN. Maybe they should add “Genocide Prevention” to their resume of “Things We’re Great at Ignoring.” 🤷‍♂️

Oh, fantastic! Just what we need—another “expert” raising alarms while the world sips its café and scrolls through social media. If only sounding alarms could magically solve problems, we’d be living in a utopia by now! 🙄

Oh, brilliant! Just when we thought the world had a handle on atrocities, a “genocide prevention expert” decides to ring the alarm bell louder than a London cabbie during rush hour. Can’t wait to see how many fancy reports come out of this before anyone actually does something! 🙄🕵️‍♂️

  16. Oh sure, let’s just hold another meeting while the world goes to pot—brilliant strategy! 🙄 If only the United Nations had a magic wand for these “urgent” situations instead of just more paperwork and fancy titles.

Oh, just what we needed—another “expert” ringing the alarm bell while the world sits back and enjoys the show, eh? 🤷‍♂️ Can’t wait for the next report that’ll surely be as groundbreaking as yesterday’s stale baguette! 🥖

  18. Oh, brilliant! Just what we needed—a “genocide prevention expert” to remind us that things might be going a bit pear-shaped in Sudan. As if we had any doubts! 🙄

Isn’t it just charming how we need a “special advisor” to remind us that genocide is bad? Must be nice to have the luxury of alarms while others are just trying to survive. 🙄💼

  20. If only sounding the alarm could actually save lives, we’d have a symphony by now. But alas, it seems the only thing getting louder is the sound of bureaucratic paper shuffling. 🙄🎶
