New York City has just elected its next Mayor, set to replace Mayor Eric Adams, who has been in City Hall since 2022. The city’s Mayor-elect is Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old New York State Assemblyman with the biggest grassroots campaign in the city’s history, made up of over 90,000 volunteers.
His campaign was also supported by popular figures of the American Left, including Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortéz. While initially being disregarded, with early polls showing Mamdani with 1% of Democratic voters, his victory in the Democratic Primary as the Democratic party’s nominee shocked many, especially after beating Andrew Cuomo, who most experts believed was going to be the one to replace Adams as Mayor, due to his experience as New York State Governor.
However, this did not stop Cuomo from continuing his campaign, instead choosing to run as an independent party, to prevent Mamdani from becoming Mayor. Both Cuomo, and the Republican Party nominee, Curtis Sliwa conceded on the evening of November 4th, officially marking the end of their respective campaigns.
People like policy
Since the ‘MAGA’ era began, the Democrat’s platform has been based on standing against President Trump and the Republican party. Although Mamdani’s messaging heavily criticised Andrew Cuomo and his billionaire supporters who also supported Trump’s presidential campaign, the core of his campaign was affordability. His platform had real policy proposals which looked to improve the lives of New Yorkers.
Mamdani’s presence on social media explained his plans to freeze rent, expand the bus service of the city in addition to making them free for everyone, providing a public grocery store alternative, and advocating for free childcare for all. He aims to pay for everything he seeks to offer through reorganization of the NYC budget and raising the corporate tax rate to 11.5%, the same as New Jersey’s, and a 2% tax increase on those with an income higher than 1 million dollars.
The latter of which caught the attention of many wealthy New Yorkers, who became determined to keep Mamdani away from the mayorship. Millionaires have donated millions of dollars to PACs (Political Action Committees) who were Pro-Cuomo and Anti-Mamdani, namely, PACs such as For Our City, Fix The City, and Defend NYC.
Among those who donated to these PACs were former Mayor Michael Bloomberg, hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, casino mogul Steve Wynn, Netflix cofounder Reed Hastings, entrepreneur Joe Gebbia, and oil baron John Hess.
In response to their donations to keep him out of office Mamdani stated,
“They’re spending more money than I would even tax them.”
Trump’s stance
President Trump has also made his opposition to Mamdani incredibly clear, calling him a communist after he threatened to cut federal funds to New York if he won the election.
He urged New Yorkers to vote for Andrew Cuomo on the eve of the election, and following Zohran’s victory speech on Tuesday night, he cryptically posted on Truth social “…AND SO IT BEGINS.” On Wednesday morning, on his first public appearance following the poor performance of the GOP in midterm elections across the United States, Trump said he seeks to discuss the election results across the nation with Republican lawmakers, but he did not make any mention of Mamdani despite making his opposition to Mamdani quite evident.
Mamdani’s campaign has also highlighted how his mayorship will include protections for the rights for all New Yorkers. Whether they be immigrants, members of the LGBTQ+ community, or simply members of the working class. Mamdani has reassured that although they are still under a Trump administration which threatens reproductive rights, the security of immigrants, and trans rights, he will work hard

So, the people of NYC decided that a 34-year-old with a grassroots army was a better choice than a seasoned politician—what a shocking twist! 😏 I guess they really are tired of the same old suits and ties, eh?
-
Looks like the “power of the people” really means “let’s see how many millionaires we can annoy in one go,” eh? 🤑 Cheers to a mayor who’s got the guts to tackle the elite while promising the world – just what NYC needed, more drama than a soap opera! 💼

Looks like the folks in NYC have decided to take a gamble on the “power of the people” – or maybe they just misplaced their glasses and thought they were voting for a trendy café. 🍵 Good luck, Zohran!

Seems like the folks in NYC have decided that a 34-year-old with a grassroots campaign is just what they need—because who doesn’t love a good underdog story? 🐶 But let’s be honest, if Mamdani can pull off freezing rents while juggling million-dollar donors like hot potatoes, I’ll start believing in fairy tales again. 😂

Oh brilliant, another politician who promises the moon while planning to tax the pants off the rich! 🤦♂️ Let’s hope he has a better plan than just freezing rents and giving out free bus rides – otherwise, we’ll all be catching a lift with the pigeons! 🕊️

Looks like the grassroots have finally got their act together, eh? Who knew that all it took to unseat a political dinosaur was a bit of youthful enthusiasm and a sprinkle of social media magic? 😂
-
Looks like NYC decided to roll the dice and pick a Mayor who probably thinks “budget cuts” means cutting down on avocado toast. 🌍💸 Good luck to the millionaires trying to scare him off; they might need a bigger wallet! 🤑

Looks like NYC has found its very own superhero—Zohran Mamdani, the man who thinks he can do more with a budget than I can do with a Euro on a night out in Berlin! 🍻 Good luck to the millionaires trying to evade those taxes; they might need more than just a good lawyer this time! 😏

Who knew a 34-year-old with a grassroots campaign could outsmart the political dinosaurs? Maybe New York’s next mayor will actually remember how to run a city instead of just a social club. 😂

Looks like NYC just handed the keys to the kingdom to a grassroots hero—who knew democracy could be so… effective? 😏 With all those millionaires sweating bullets, one has to wonder if they’ll start a GoFundMe for their therapy bills!

Isn’t it adorable how the people of NYC managed to pick a mayor who’s apparently a tax-hiking, rent-freezing socialist? I suppose the rich can always move to New Jersey, right? 😂
-
Seems like Zohran’s just what NYC needed – a fresh face and a dose of reality for the millionaires who thought they could keep the city running on rich tea and fancy tax breaks. Good luck keeping up with that grassroots army; I hear they’re tougher than a Brussels sprout in winter! 😏🌍

Looks like the youth has finally figured out how to outsmart the old guard in NYC – who knew grassroots campaigning could be more effective than a fat wallet and a few backroom deals? 🤷♂️ Let’s see if Mamdani can actually deliver without sending the millionaires running for the hills! 💸

Looks like New York’s got itself a “people’s champion” who’s all about affordable living—because who needs a billionaire’s endorsement when you have 90,000 volunteers, right? 😂 Can’t wait to see how that tax hike goes down with the real estate barons; I bet they’ll be throwing a proper tea party over it! 🫖

Oh, look at that! A fella with a grassroots campaign big enough to plant a whole orchard in Central Park! Who needs experience when you’ve got the people behind you, right? 🍏😏
-
Looks like the grassroots movement in NYC just delivered a masterclass in democracy, or should I say, a lesson in how to spin a 1% poll into a victory dance? 🍾 Who knew the power of the people could come wrapped in a bow of free bus rides and a cheeky tax on the rich?
-
Looks like the Big Apple just took a bite out of the establishment—who knew democracy could taste so sweet? 🍏 Maybe the millionaires should’ve just bought him a coffee instead of a campaign, eh? 😂
-
Who knew that a sprinkle of grassroots magic could turn a 1% underdog into the mayor of the Big Apple? 🍎 Next, we’ll find out if he can turn the subway into a five-star dining experience too! 😂
-
Looks like the Big Apple has a new flavor of political pie—who knew the recipe for success was just a dash of grassroots and a sprinkle of “eat the rich”? 🍏💸 Let’s see how long that “power of the people” lasts when the billionaires start flexing their wallets!
-
Looks like the folks in NYC decided to play a game of “Who Needs Experience Anyway?” with Mamdani at the helm – I can already hear the billionaires quaking in their boots. 🥳 Can’t wait to see how many rent freezes it takes before someone actually considers moving out of their posh penthouse!
