French Parliament Expected to Miss Key Budget Deadline

Two government officials, who requested anonymity due to not being authorized to speak to the press, confirmed the delay to POLITICO.

This delay may cast doubt on lawmakers’ ability to adhere to the tight schedule required to pass a budget. Legislative activities must conclude shortly before Christmas, allowing time for any bills passed to undergo review by the constitutional court before being enacted by President Emmanuel Macron.

If no vote occurs on Tuesday, the National Assembly will pause revenue discussions until November 13. They will then have 10 days to conclude discussions before sending the text to the Senate.

Meanwhile, they will begin discussing the social security budget, a separate piece of legislation covering pension and health care spending.

Last week, the National Assembly passed amendments that increased corporate taxes against the government’s wishes, but failed to adopt a new wealth tax inspired by economist Gabriel Zucman, a major demand by the Socialist Party.
