The Maltese commissioner stated that the EU executive will keep collaborating with UEFA and LaLiga to ensure financial redistribution from top clubs to amateur leagues, following a Madrid court finding them in breach of EU competition law.
In June, Spain’s competition authority initiated an antitrust probe into UEFA, a case observers, including a former advocate general, suggest should be handled by the European Commission.
“[The Super League] contradicts the European Sports Model principles and failed in 2021 as it was a bad idea from the outset,” Micallef asserted, highlighting its rejection by fans, players, and governments across Europe at the time.
The commissioner’s remarks came after the European Parliament passed a resolution in October opposing “breakaway competitions.”
Real Madrid and A22 Sports Management have announced plans to seek damages from UEFA following the court decision.
Despite the Super League’s 2021 collapse, its supporters continue efforts to establish a breakaway competition.
