(Brussels) – “Europe stands with you,” expressed the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on Wednesday, marking the anniversary of the Valencia flood that claimed 229 lives.
“One year after the catastrophic floods in Valencia, we are with the people of Spain,” she stated in a social media message, highlighting that the EU has allocated nearly 3 billion euros to assist “the individuals, businesses, and communities impacted.”
“We share your grief. We will always remember the remarkable unity of a community that came together to rebuild,” Von der Leyen noted, as her spokesperson, Paula Pinho, conveyed these words during the European Commission’s daily press briefing.
Similarly, the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, recalled the “devastating floods that impacted Valencia” a year prior, “testing the resilience of its people.”
“In times of hardship, Europe stood in solidarity with the affected communities in Spain. My thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the victims, and with the entire Spanish populace. Together, we continue to rebuild,” Metsola remarked on social media.
The names of the 237 victims of the October 29, 2024 flood will be honored at the State funeral this Wednesday in Valencia, coinciding with the first anniversary of the tragedy. A minute of silence will be observed in their memory, and the kings will present a floral tribute at the event, attended by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and almost all cabinet members, alongside the Valencian government led by Carlos Mazón.
