Antwerp Launches Major Repair Work on Mexico Bridges in Eilandje

Antwerp (Eurotoday Newspaper) – Antwerp will repair the 2 parallel Mexico bridges in Eilandje from October 20–31, 2025. Closed since the summer, the 420-ton bridges affect road traffic, Tram 24, shipping, and commuters during the 12-day works.

As VRT News reported, Antwerp will begin repairs on the Mexico bridges in the Eilandje district on Monday, October 20, 2025. They mentioned that the bridges are an important link between the city centre and locations such as the Port House. They include separate sections for cars, trucks, and trams.

Officials said that frequent opening and closing over time caused the 420-ton bridge sections to shift slightly. This misalignment created a risk of structural damage with every movement. Because of this, the bridges have been closed since the summer. Both road traffic and trams have been unable to use the crossing during this period.

When will Antwerp complete repairs on the Mexico bridges in Eilandje?

The city of Antwerp will carry out repairs on the Mexico bridges for 12 days starting Monday, October 20, 2025. The work will start the day after the Antwerp Marathon. During the marathon, one of the bridge sections will be temporarily opened to allow runners to cross.

During the repair period, current traffic diversions will stay in place. Tram line 24 will temporarily end at the MAS museum. The bridges will also be closed to shipping, and no vessels can pass underneath on October 20 and 21, 2025. The city expects all disruptions to be cleared by the evening of Friday, October 31, 2025, when the bridges are scheduled to reopen.

Antwerp has carried out similar bridge repairs before. In 2019, the Kattendijk Bridge near the Eilandje district was closed for several weeks for renovation. The work fixed misaligned sections and reinforced the structure. During the repairs, road traffic was diverted, trams were temporarily stopped, and ships could not pass under the bridge.

Blimey, nothing says ‘efficient urban planning’ quite like waiting two years to fix a couple of bridges that have been on a permanent holiday since summer! 🚧 Might as well pour a few more beers while we’re at it, eh? 🍻

Looks like Antwerp’s taken a page out of the “How to Close a Bridge” handbook – next they’ll be tossing in a coffee shop for the commuters! 😏 Can’t wait for the grand reopening party on Halloween! 🎉🚧

  9. Oh, brilliant! Just what we needed—12 days of traffic chaos for a couple of bridges that probably just wanted a holiday. 🚧 Let’s hope they don’t open them just in time for the next marathon, or we’ll all be running for our lives! 😂

Brilliant! What better way to celebrate the Antwerp Marathon than by cordoning off the bridges so only the runners get to enjoy the view? 🚧🏃‍♂️ Who needs traffic when you can have a picturesque detour? 😂
