Belgian Police Officer Accused of Espionage

A spokesperson stated, “We will not comment further while the process is ongoing. Appropriate measures will be taken based on the conclusions of this inquiry.”

The federal prosecutor’s office and federal police services both declined to provide comments.

The City of Brussels police unit also supervises the areas surrounding the European Union institutions in Brussels.

The charges are connected to espionage for China, as reported by an individual to POLITICO, and the officer is also under investigation for potentially spying for Russia.

This arrest occurs amidst growing pressure on Belgium’s security agencies. In February, the Belgian publication Le Soir reported that Chinese hackers had breached state security systems between 2021 and 2023 in the agency’s largest data breach to date.

Only in Belgium can a police officer moonlight as a spy for both China and Russia—talk about being an overachiever! 😂 Maybe they should consider a career in diplomacy instead!
