Portugal deems the use of immobilized Russian assets as “well thought out” but urges caution to prevent “future implications.”

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro stated today that the plan to utilize frozen Russian assets for Ukraine support is a “well-thought-out solution,” emphasizing the need for strengthening it to avoid any “failure or future implications.”

“I believe that what is being envisioned is a solution that has been well thought out,” Montenegro remarked as he arrived at an informal European Council meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The Prime Minister noted that “the focus now is to bolster the legal framework” of the European Commission’s proposal, “to prevent any failures or complications down the line.”

Montenegro acknowledged that Portugal aims to be “an active participant” in this initiative.

He asserted that the Portuguese Government supports the solution since it guarantees that “no additional funds” will be required.

“We will utilize the frozen assets to enhance Ukraine’s capacity,” he concluded.

Oh, brilliant! Let’s just raid the piggy bank of frozen assets and hope it all works out—nothing says “future-proof” like a tightrope walk over a legal minefield. 🙃

So, let me get this straight: we’re going to ‘well-thought-out’ our way through frozen Russian assets like a chef trying to whip up a soufflé with stale eggs? Good luck with that, mate. 🍳😅
