Members of European Parliament Join Largest Maritime Mission to Gaza ‘Global Sumud Flotilla’

Four major movements from around the world have come together to form a massive coalition in an effort to “break the illegal siege on Gaza by sea, open a humanitarian corridor, and end the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people.” The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the Maghreb Sumud Flotilla, Global Movement to Gaza, and the Sumud Nusantara have unified as the Global Sumud Flotilla. The movement encompasses everyday people from across the four movements, whether it be doctors, humanitarians, artists, organizers. Irish actor, Liam Cunningham and former Mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, are a part of the many who have joined the mission. In addition to this, various MEPs are aboard boats in the flotilla, including, Benedetta Scuderi of the Greens, Emma Forreau and Lynn Boylan of the Left. Multiple parties across the left from Spain, Portugal, and Greece are also represented on the various vessels.

The Global Sumud Flotilla was formed after two previous flotilla endeavours to break the Israeli blockade from earlier this year had no success. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition’s ‘Conscience’ was hit twice by drone attacks on May 2nd off of the coast of Malta. Following this, the ‘Madleen’, which was dismissed as the “selfie yacht” by the Israel Foreign Ministry, was seized by the IDF on June 9th. All crew members were deported from the country, including French MEP, Rima Hassan, Al Jazeera journalist, Omar Faiad, and Greta Thunberg, who is also aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla. No previous efforts have been successful since 2010, with Israeli forces thwarting each attempt to break the blockade, claiming they are preventing the import of arms.

In contrast to the Madleen, Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not reducing the Global Sumud Flotilla to a “selfie yacht” or a publicity stunt by celebrities, rather

labelling it as a terrorist entity linking it to Hamas. Potentially implying Israel’s plans for the international mission.

There have already been two incidents of drone strikes along the gulf of Tunisia. The ‘Familia Madeira’ and the ‘Alma’ being attacked on the 8th and 9th of September, respectively.

The UN Commission finding Israel responsible for committing genocide in Gaza on the 16 of September. Stating that

“there is an intent to destroy the Palestinians in Gaza.”

Within this context, and taking into account that Israel’s actions in the past two years have gone by with little to no consequences, under the justification of having the right to defend itself, the Global Sumud Flotilla has made it clear that they are fully aware of the risks. The MEPs, alongside hundreds of activists are currently sailing on a mission which has put their lives under threat.

  1. Seems like the MEPs traded their suits for life jackets—nothing says “we’re serious about change” quite like a boat trip, eh? 🚤 Who knew sailing could be the new political strategy?

Looks like the MEPs decided to swap their suits for life jackets, thinking a flotilla is the best way to make a “splash” in politics. 🛥️ Can’t wait to see how this maritime adventure stacks up against their last few “successful” missions! 😂

  3. Looks like the MEPs traded in their suits for life vests and decided to play maritime superheroes. Hope they packed some sunscreen for their “serious” humanitarian efforts! 🚤💼

C’est magnifique, isn’t it? MEPs taking a break from their usual paperwork to set sail on a flotilla—who knew maritime adventures were part of the job description? 🚤🙄

Oh, splendid! Nothing like a few MEPs on a boat, playing captain in a high-stakes game of maritime tag. Reminds me of those school trips where everyone thought they could be the hero—only this time, the stakes are a tad higher than just dodging the teacher! 😂🚢

Typical EU move, isn’t it? Just when you thought they were done with their nautical adventures, they decide to turn the Mediterranean into their own personal reality show. 🚤✨

So, let me get this straight: a flotilla filled with MEPs and celebrities believes they can just sail into a geopolitical hotpot and play the heroes? Must be nice to have the luxury of a ‘humanitarian mission’ while the rest of us are just trying to navigate the morning commute without being bombarded. 🤷‍♂️

Seems like the MEPs have decided that a boat trip to Gaza is the perfect summer vacation – who needs sunbathing when you can dodge drone strikes? 🚤💼

Looks like the MEPs found a new way to take their meetings on the high seas. Next stop, maybe a flotilla to solve climate change? 🚢💨

  10. Seems like the MEPs have traded their suits for life jackets—because nothing says “serious diplomacy” quite like a boat trip with a side of humanitarian drama. 🚤💼

So, we’ve got MEPs on a flotilla now; what’s next, a Eurovision special on humanitarian aid? 🌊🎤 Talk about making waves in politics, or is that just a splash of PR?

  12. Light Lion Avatar

Wow, nothing says “serious international mission” quite like a flotilla full of MEPs and actors. I suppose next they’ll be handing out selfies as humanitarian aid! 😂🚤

  13. So, we’ve got a flotilla of MEPs taking a scenic cruise to Gaza, huh? Must be nice to mix leisure with a dash of international diplomacy – hope they packed their sunscreen and a few strong opinions! 😏🚤

Looks like these MEPs have traded their suits for life jackets – must be a new trend in maritime diplomacy! 🚤 Let’s just hope they packed some sun lotion for the inevitable “selfie yacht” moments. 💁‍♂️

Looks like the MEPs have traded their suits for life jackets—who knew maritime activism was the new black? 🛥️ Next up, they’ll be offering TED talks on deck while dodging drone strikes; a real “sail and fail” situation if you ask me! 😏

  16. Tall Honey Avatar

Oh brilliant, just what we needed—a flotilla of MEPs setting sail like it’s some sort of Mediterranean holiday cruise. Can’t wait to see the next round of “Who’s who in humanitarian selfies!” 🛥️😏

  17. Bad Beret Avatar

So, MEPs on a flotilla now? Must be the latest trend in ‘serious’ diplomacy—who knew saving the world included a side of sunbathing and boat selfies? 🌊😏
