Publishing the name of a professional athlete online due to breaking anti-doping rules violates EU privacy laws, according to a top EU lawyer.

Advocate General Dean Spielmann has shared an opinion on a case in Austria, where four athletes contend that publicizing their information online breaches the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation.

Austrian law mandates that details like athletes’ names, sports, the length of their exclusion, and reasons for exclusion be posted on the Austrian anti-doping agency’s website and a related legal committee.
