During the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed that NATO countries should engage Russian aircraft entering their airspace.
Shortly after, Polish Foreign Affairs Minister Radosław Sikorski reacted to Trump’s comments via a clip, affirming with, “Roger that.”
On Wednesday, speaking on Britain’s LBC radio, Sikorski expanded on his stance, emphasizing the military’s responsibility to defend its airspace and indicating readiness to act accordingly.
He also mentioned a preference for intercepting drones and cruise missiles over Ukrainian territory as a proactive measure before they pose threats to NATO regions.
Russia’s involvement in Europe includes more than just airspace violations; it has also increased espionage, cyberattacks, and election interference efforts in Europe following its conflict initiation with Ukraine.
“Russia tests every front,” stated von der Leyen to CNN, highlighting the ongoing hybrid warfare faced by EU democracies. She asserted the EU’s resolve to counteract on all platforms, making it clear: NATO’s decision is crucial, but EU territory is untouchable.
While von der Leyen lacks authority over military actions in EU nations, her perspective commands significant influence given her role in the bloc’s executive.
