Ropke: We Aim for New EU Memberships in the Coming Years

Brussels – The message from the European Commission to candidate countries for EU membership is clear: we are prepared to welcome new member states in the coming years, provided they meet the necessary conditions, says the president of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), Oliver Ropke.

– This has been a longstanding commitment of the European Union. However, over recent years, this promise has not been fulfilled by either side. We now have a unique opportunity for enlargement that we must seize, Ropke stated in an interview with ENR, which includes MIA and 24 other European news agencies.

According to Ropke, the Committee prioritizes enlargement and advocates for the active engagement of civil society representatives from candidate countries in the reform processes necessary for membership based on merit.

– This approach is widely accepted. What we need now is strong political will. I see that emerging, and I must emphasize that the EESC fully supports this vision, Ropke underscores.

To achieve this objective, Ropke explains that the EESC has initiated involvement from candidates for enlargement, as well as specific bodies like joint advisory committees, which facilitate structured cooperation among social partners, civil society, and governments. These bodies monitor the situation and provide recommendations for the enlargement process.

– I believe our efforts have led to tangible improvements, adds Ropke. (September 18, 2025)

Oh, brilliant! Because nothing says “we’re serious about EU membership” quite like a committee meeting while sipping espresso and discussing “opportunities” without actually committing to anything. 🙄

Oh, brilliant! Just what we need—more paperwork and endless meetings as we “embrace” new members. I suppose they think they’ll just waltz in like it’s a free buffet. 🍽️

  3. Oh, fantastic! Just what we need—more countries lining up for the privilege of navigating our endless bureaucracy. 🥳 Hope they packed their patience and a good sense of humor!

New EU memberships? Brilliant! Just what we need—more flags to add to the collection while we’re at it! 🇪🇺 Can’t wait for the next meeting where we all agree to agree on things we forgot last time! 😂

Oh great, just what we need—more countries lining up for membership like they’re queuing for a free croissant at a Parisian café. Can’t wait to see how many conditions they can juggle while the rest of us enjoy our espresso. 🍵😏

Of course, because who wouldn’t want to jump through endless hoops just to join a club that can’t decide what to have for lunch? 🍽️ Good luck to those poor souls navigating this bureaucratic maze! 😂

Oh, look at that, the EU is rolling out the welcome mat again—just what we need, more bureaucratic red tape and meetings about meetings! 🥳 Who knew “strong political will” could sound so much like a fancy coffee order? ☕️

  10. Talk about setting the bar high! With the EU’s track record, I’m sure those candidate countries are just dying to jump through all those hoops. 😂

Oh sure, because what we really need in Europe right now is a few more countries to join the club and complicate our fine dining reservations. 😂 Let’s just hope their ‘necessary conditions’ don’t include understanding our sense of humor!
