Climate change has increased the average temperature in Europe’s largest cities by 2.2 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial times, raising the risk of heat waves, according to Otto. This past summer was recorded as the third hottest globally, reported by the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service. The extreme heat particularly endangers older adults and those with pre-existing health issues, such as heart disease and diabetes. A study found that people aged 65 and over accounted for 85 percent of excess heat-related deaths this summer, underscoring the growing threat to Europe’s aging population. “An increasing heat wave temperature of just 2 to 4 degrees [Celsius] can mean the difference between life and death for thousands of people,” said Garyfallos Konstantinoudis, a lecturer at the Grantham Institute for Climate Change, who contributed to the study, noting that heat waves are “silent killers.” Researchers emphasized that the recorded death toll only provides a snapshot, as the study focused on 854 cities with populations over 50,000 in the EU and the U.K., covering about 30 percent of Europe’s population.
