US tech firms pour £30 billion into UK as Trump arrives

Nvidia chips will power British data centers, with the company shipping up to 120,000 advanced GPUs, funded by investments from Microsoft, Nscale, OpenAI, and CoreWeave.

About half of these GPUs will be allocated to British data center firm Nscale, partnering with Microsoft to build the largest AI supercomputer in the UK at Loughton, Essex, using 23,000 Nvidia chips.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that Stargate UK, bringing 8,000 GPUs to the nation, would “accelerate scientific breakthroughs, improve productivity, and drive economic growth.”

Microsoft will provide the most substantial investment, committing £22 billion in the UK over the next four years. About half of this will be for capital expenses on AI infrastructure, with the rest supporting ongoing operations, including AI model development, gaming, and product development.

“We’re focused on British pounds, not empty tech promises,” said Microsoft President Brad Smith at a press conference on Tuesday.

Google also inaugurated a new data center in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, on Tuesday, pledging to invest £5 billion in the UK over the next two years.
