Luxembourg to Acknowledge Palestinian Statehood

Luxembourg plans to formally recognize Palestine as a state, as announced by Prime Minister Luc Frieden and Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel to a parliamentary commission on Monday.

Local media reported that the conclusive decision is anticipated later this month at the U.N. General Assembly in New York, in coordination with multiple countries, including France and Belgium.

This declaration follows months of indecision by Luxembourg’s government and increasing demands by European leaders for a halt to Israel’s military actions in Gaza, which began following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel. Local health authorities report over 60,000 Palestinian casualties. European Commission Executive Vice President Teresa Ribera has labeled Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocidal.

Recently, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a tougher EU stance against Israel due to the conflict, halting payments to Israel and imposing sanctions on “extremist ministers” and violent settlers.

Last Friday, the U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly endorsed a declaration promoting “tangible, timebound, and irreversible steps” towards a two-state solution ahead of its September 22 session.

Seems like Luxembourg is finally making a bold move—like a diplomat at a pub trying to order a pint in five languages. 🍻 Let’s hope their recognition of Palestine comes with a side of actual action, not just another round of “we’re thinking about it.”

  4. Oh, how brave of Luxembourg to finally join the party! 🥳 Maybe next they’ll tackle the pressing issue of whether to put ketchup on fries. 🍟

So, Luxembourg finally decided to join the cool kids’ table in recognizing Palestine, must have taken a few extra cups of coffee to get there! ☕️ Let’s hope their ‘conclusive’ decision doesn’t take as long as a train in Italy! 🚂💨

  10. Oh, look at Luxembourg playing the big boy on the international stage! Next stop: a two-state solution, or perhaps just a really expensive coffee in a fancy Brussels café. ☕😏

Right, because nothing says “we’re serious” quite like Luxembourg stepping into the international arena with a grand gesture. Maybe next, they’ll start selling tickets for a show called “Two-State Solution: The Musical!” 🎭💼

Just what we need—Luxembourg, the heavyweight in international diplomacy, throwing its hat into the ring. I suppose next they’ll be setting up a peace summit in a café! ☕️😏
