Luxembourg plans to formally recognize Palestine as a state, as announced by Prime Minister Luc Frieden and Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel to a parliamentary commission on Monday.
Local media reported that the conclusive decision is anticipated later this month at the U.N. General Assembly in New York, in coordination with multiple countries, including France and Belgium.
This declaration follows months of indecision by Luxembourg’s government and increasing demands by European leaders for a halt to Israel’s military actions in Gaza, which began following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel. Local health authorities report over 60,000 Palestinian casualties. European Commission Executive Vice President Teresa Ribera has labeled Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocidal.
Recently, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a tougher EU stance against Israel due to the conflict, halting payments to Israel and imposing sanctions on “extremist ministers” and violent settlers.
Last Friday, the U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly endorsed a declaration promoting “tangible, timebound, and irreversible steps” towards a two-state solution ahead of its September 22 session.
