“It is always in times of deadlock and tension that our country has moved forward,” he stated. “My state of mind is simple: I want neither instability nor immobility.”
Lecornu is striving to distinguish himself from the budget cuts that François Bayrou attempted and failed to implement in the French assembly, leading to Bayrou’s downfall on September 8.
France is attempting to reduce its spending to address its debt of €3.3 trillion and a budget deficit comprising 5.4 percent of its economic output.
However, a divided legislature has stalled French policymaking since President Emmanuel Macron called for snap parliamentary elections last year. Lecornu will be the latest premier attempting to pass a budget with backing from the center-left Socialists and the conservative Les Républicains.
“I want to tell the French … we will get there,” Lecornu remarked earlier this week at the official handover ceremony, standing beside Bayrou.
