São Paulo – Belgian Foreign Affairs Minister Hadja Lahbib will have to depart from her economic mission in Brazil earlier than planned, as she is scheduled to be in Strasbourg for the European Parliament session on Wednesday. This was confirmed by the federal public service of Foreign Affairs.
During the plenary session on Wednesday in Strasbourg, the European Parliament will vote on the approval of the new European Commission. Lahbib is set to assume the role of European Commissioner for Preparedness and Crisis Management, along with Equality, and she may be entrusted with additional duties. The new team under President Ursula von der Leyen could officially take office on December 1.
Lahbib will leave Brazil on Monday, meaning she will only participate in a portion of the economic mission led by Princess Astrid, which is taking place from Sunday to Friday across São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. She is expected to be present on Sunday for the mission’s commencement, which includes a visit to the Solvay chemical company’s facility located near São Paulo.
After Lahbib’s departure, the mission will still feature political representation from Flemish Prime Minister Matthias Diependaele, Brussels Prime Minister Rudi Vervoort, and Walloon Deputy Prime Minister Pierre-Yves Jeholet, though Jeholet will exit after the São Paulo events.
