Russian scientists have announced the development of a new cancer vaccine ready for clinical use, according to the Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA). FMBA head Veronika Skvortsova revealed the news during the Eastern Economic Forum, as reported by Russian news agency TASS.
Named Enteromix, the vaccine utilizes mRNA technology, similar to that used in some Covid-19 vaccines. Instead of using a weakened virus, mRNA vaccines enable the body’s cells to produce proteins that trigger an immune response against cancer cells.
Skvortsova stated that the vaccine has been under research for several years, including three years of essential preclinical trials. The findings indicate that it is safe with multiple doses and shows high effectiveness: tumors in some patients shrank or grew more slowly by 60-80%, depending on the cancer type. Improved survival rates were also observed.
The initial application will target colon cancer, with ongoing development for vaccines against glioblastoma, a rapidly growing brain cancer, and specific melanoma types, including ocular melanoma.
The vaccine was introduced at the 10th Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, attended by over 8,400 participants from more than 75 countries.
