Ministers of the Informal Forest Group Address Challenges Facing European Forests

Maribor – A meeting of ministers in charge of forestry from the expanded Forest + Group commenced in Maribor on Thursday, following the signing of guidelines for new members. This group now includes Italy and Latvia in addition to Austria, Finland, Sweden, France, and Slovenia. The group’s mission is to foster partnerships and trust among member states, encourage open dialogue, align positions on crucial European forestry policy issues, and enhance the effectiveness of member states in negotiations and the shaping of European legislation, according to Slovenian Minister of Agriculture Mateja Čalušić.

She noted that the two-day meeting aims to share perspectives and professional experiences regarding the current challenges in the EU forestry sector and to discuss the implementation of European regulations that impact forests and forestry.

“The inclusion of forestry institute directors adds significant value, bridging the gap between policy and practice. Thus, this meeting serves as a chance to strengthen inter-country cooperation and reinforce the shared European commitment to the sustainable management of forests. Our collective aim is to maintain healthy, resilient, and productive forests for future generations,” Čalušić remarked.

Slovenia is presiding over the informally established group for the first time this year. The Forest Group was founded three years ago by Slovenia, Austria, Sweden, and Finland, with Italy and Latvia now joining. Like several other group members, Slovenia is one of the EU countries with the highest forest coverage, as forests account for nearly 60 percent of its land area. (August 28)
